Porsche Crest The Porsche bug has bitten me again

After a rather brief but enjoyable 1987 944 Turbo experience, followed by a 1983 911sc for a couple of years (I get bored easily) the most recent 5 year drought just ended with a new German friend, a 1985 911 Cab. Needed some TLC. Did the usual upgrades, new H4 headlights and rings, new steering wheel. Now I need to upgrade the stereo so I can hear the damn thing while driving to work every a.m. (Southern Cal. has its perks). Any other easy but fun upgrades I should know about? Stay tuned. Many more stupid questions to follow.

Put a set of Bilsteins and turbo tie rods on the car if it does not already have them. Will make you smile everytime you turn into a corner!

Re the stereo, work in an amplifier in the system and a good set of speakers. Well worth the money!

Forget the radio. Get a louder exhaust system. What could be better music than a Porsche flat 6?

echo Joeaska......except I am not bothered about the tunes.

I would get the hood cover if you don't already have it, really neatens up the lines when the roof is down - which is all the time for So. Cal I guess.

I must make/buy a "wind deflector" when I am back on the road, maybe then the wife will let us drive hood down more often.

Also maybe I will not be so deaf in my left ear when I am hooning around top down - In winter it does get a bit chilly as well.

The exhaust seems pretty loud (in a good way) already. I guess this will be the beginning of the stupid questions. How do you tell whether the exhaust is stock by looking at it? I am not sure if the slight rumble I am hearing is from an old 17 year old part or was actually intended to be there. BUT I adamantly refuse to have this car sound like one of those Japanese low riders with the coffee can exhausts that piss me off every time I hear them.

As for the stereo, I don't want to do anything drastic, just put better speakers where the old ones were. The front two are actually factory originals, the rear two are some crappy pioneers. My stereo blows fuses every time I turn up the volume past a certain point (Very annoying). Already have a low profile Alpine amp that I am hoping to mount. QUESTION: Better to mount under seat or in the trunk?

I have a 5 channel amp mounted under the hood...where it can be locked and out of sight....even better since you own a Cab. Boston Acoustics drop right into the OEM speaker holes. No cutting to do this install...sounds great!

Come on guys, Stone drives in So Cal every morning. A radio is needed to hear the traffic reports to figure out why the traffic is at a standstill each day. It is also necessary while sitting in the traffic jams because the sound of a flat six is not "music" going 5 mph.

Hey Paul, 5 mph in SoCal traffic? You must be on a toll road!

I have to agree with PBS911--the engine does sound different while at a standstill. Sometimes kind of frightening since I am no expert on what it is supposed to sound like. Start smelling some things as well.

Oh well, keep on driving it until something breaks. Isn't that the SOP for these things?
