Date stamp on crankcase?

Whereabouts is the date stamp (year) on the crankcase? Can it be seen while the engine is still in the car?

You don't mention which car or series you are interested-in.

There is no "date" stamp as such....you usually look for an engine "type" number....like 930/21....and then find the serial number, like 64EXXXXXX.

The combination of these 2 numbers...cross referenced against known text books and tech/spec books....will determine the model and year of car for which it was intended. Do a search on engine type numbers and serial numbers.

The easiest identifier is the engine serial # on the right side of the fan support. From 1968 on the third digit is the year. There are casting dates on the case halves, but these are generally under the pulley. If you have an un-numbered case (replacement) then the casting part #'s on each case half will be a guide (L 901.101.101.xx & R 901.101.102.xx)
