911 or 914/6
I am contemplating either my 2nd 911 purchase or a nice 914/6. I had an 81 911sc it was a real nice car had a few problems with it but hated the 915 trans, Now I am contemplating another 911 or a 914/6, if I went with another 911 I will go with a carrera with a 3.2 and a lower mileage car but a 914/6 with a 3.0 or a modified 2.7 would be a lot of fun also. I am not after a factory 914/6 and would actually prefer a car thats been converted properly. The car would strictly be a weekend toy/autocross car. what do you guys think.

Yeah, but a 901 has a real shift pattern.

Speaking from personal experience, buy a 914/6 - it's a car every Porsche owner should own. If only Porsche had kept it going and developed it properly, like the 911, we wouldn't have ended up with the Boxster (ugh).
914/6 = almost perfect.

I would guess this won't be the last P-Car you own, you owe it to yourself to give the 914/6 a shot. I've never owned one, but I've driven 4 and while each was a little different, I was grinning from ear to ear every time.
Decisions like this are a great problem to have Jeff C 81 SC |

So this will be a 2nd car, in addition to a 911? If so, the 914/6 for sure. Never driven one, but I'd love to add one to my collection some day! -- Curt

I strongly agree with Cegerer. If you already have a 911, get the 914. It's a completely different car and different experience than the 911. Especially if it's a weekend fun car, get the 914. It will make a great complement to your 911 experience.

Hey, this is a fun thread - the 914 list invades the 911 list
I too am a big 914/6 fan. My next p-car will be a 914/6 race car. The feel of the cars are totally different. I do things in my 914 that I would not dream of trying in my 911 -- not that it couldn't do it to, but a "trouser soiling" moment in a 911 can be just a big grin in a 914. They are highly tossable, forgiving, stable cars. The winning combination IMHO - 911 street car for "grand touring", going on dates, and beach trips, etc. 914 for the track and weekend canyon carving. A nice sedan, SUV or whatever for daily driver duties. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Cheers,

They had the 'perfect' 914/6 already developed in '72 when the accountants killed production of the 916 ... and if the proper evolution had continued it would have eventually gotten the RS 2.7 and RS 3.0 engines, and they would have been even better! There are times when the 'right' kind of engineering project should be done, and gut feeling should be relied upon rather than projections of accountants who don't know the product, the market, and certainly NOT when a prototype just feels and looks right! The 916 would have absolutely killed the whole Ferrari 308 evolution in the market ... had Piech's wizards been left to their magic without interference!

Dream Car Garage..........
Get the 914-6. Unless your going to be a concours collector, I'd get a good conversion. Save $$$$. Plus, usually more push in the seat of the pants. 2.7 or 3.0. And some 3.2's, scary thought. JP and Jim helped me buy my dream car. 1973 2.0. in Portland. Like JP said I might what more push. Not so far. But I have dreams of saving a 2.7 form the scrap man. After my 74 914 project is complete in a couple years. Maybe ???? Good Luck ......... The best feeling is opening the door to the garage and seeing both cars sitting there side by side.

914/6 vs 911
Wow, after seeing all the positive feedback on the 914/6, I guess I should go see a friend of mine. He has a 914/6 that he bought new and it rests in his gararge with 38,000 miles on it. He told me a year ago I could by it but it would be north of 20 grand,so my interest kinda faded. There are very few unmolested cars left. A proper conversion would be more fun I think.

Automahn,
Go for the 914/6, but get the converted or modified example. My 911 seems tame compared to the acceleration and handling of my 914/6 3.2.

The 914 has the advantage of being a light weight.....sports car.
It is relatively easy for a converted 6er to meet the 10:1 lbs to hp ratio. Throw in a few suspension tweaks ( add sticky tires are for self preservation) and you have a weapon that will challenge your driving skills for some time. My driving is not equal to the capabilites of the car , but I'm workin' on it.

Gee, I might be the only one here to say the oposite. As a former owner of a '72 914 and current owner of a '73 (these are not 914-6s, but I know what everyone is saying about the seat of the pants performance), I sure miss that ole targa w/ those nice comfy seats and that unmistakeable 911 ride. But the upkeep of the 911's is a different story, eh?
