For an Al gearbox, what is the best way to clean it once it is out of the car?
In the past, a bunch of elbow grease, brake cleaner, small brushes, etc. has been used. This time, I would like to be a bit smarter. Hoping for a magic chemical. TIA

A power washer will get the road grime off but not do anything about the dull finish if that is more what you are asking about.

Some quality shops have a "washmachine" they clean large casing, blocks, etc. Rothsport (Tualatin, Oregon) run my 1979 915 transmission through their washer and it came out looking like new. They drained the fluid and plugged the small vent and in it went.

Three step process.
1 scrape off heavy crap with a wooden stick 2 paint the surface with simple green over a large pan then wash with water 3 hit the remaining dirt with brake cleaner Let transmission stand over night between steps two and three.
