OT: If James Bond was a real man ...

... he wouldn't drive one of these:

Most of you probably already know this, but James Bond and Aston Martin will be re-united in the 20th Bond adventure currently in production. He'll be driving the new V12 Vanquish.

Well all know that if Bond was a real man he'd drive an air-cooled 911, preferably one with semi-trailing arms!

If I was the producer, I'd have him piloting a silver '73 RSR, perhaps the silver, Martini Racing-liveried one that 007 is forced to steal from the Porsche Museum to evade capture!

Matt? Hate to say this, but wayyyy back in high screwal, I read a newspaper article about an Aston-Martin going from zero to a hundred, AND STOP AGAIN at what then was considered an unbelievable figure. Now that "James Bond" has become politically correct, only practicing safe sex, and NEVER smoking? Yawn....ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzz. Young guys? You shoulda been there...back in the high point of Porsche. When it was making history, instead of relying on it to sell a yuppie SUV...If you ever read the books? James Bond drove an Aston-Martin. Sorry about that.

Who cares? Bond is a sissy Brit. (No offense to you manly Brit's out there) Real men, like Steve McQueen, drive real 911's with semi-trailing arms. But he's dead. And so is that era. Very unfortunate. :(

I am glad you are not the producer, for two reasons.

First, they would screw it up. (Anyone see "Driven", or "The Fast and the Furious") Unless there is a really good reason to get it right (Like Steve McQueen says so) they will screw it up. They will put nitrus in it, or airbags, or make it 3 on the tree, or something else completely stoopid and wrong for the car. The general public will never notice, but we will, and it will irritate the hell out of us. The only things Hollywood manages to screw up more than cars are firearms and computers (I just saw Swordfish. Please.)

Second, they would destroy the car. In fact, they would destroy several cars during the filming, and they ain't making them any more. Who cares if there are a few less Aston Martin's or BMW's (the last movie) around. There are lots, and they can just crank out a few more.

Now, if Steve McQueen was still alive......:D

Well if anyone has caught the JagF1 launch a few days ago they'd see the 007 logos on the mirrors. Hopefully he'll have to do something involving DRIVING one. I'd love to see that. If so, I hope they don't mess it up (like in Driven) by running on of last years JagF3 cars and expect us to be fooled! (or in Driven's case a toyota atlantic)

007 needs to be in a British Car. I was fully PO'd when they put him in a BMW, and a 911 would be just as bad, especially knowing that they would destroy a bunch of old Porsches. Nuff Said.

emcon5 01-16-2002 07:59 AM

Come to think of it, Hollywood screws up aircraft pretty bad too. Anyone remember the 007 movie where Bond and the girl were being chased by a Helicopter? Here is a reminder: hovering, with a 50-60degree nose down attitude, inching forward using the main rotor blades like a Cuisinart to chop up a outdoor market.

Yeah, that could happen.

If these jokers got a hold of an early 911, they would probably have him check the oil in the front or something.

No offence Jack, I am sure you would write it properly.

Tom

John, we spoke of me locating euro bumpers for some of your British cars, didn't we? Email me, I have the info we talked about.

007 can only have one car, Aston Martin DB5:

rscupper 01-16-2002 09:25 AM

But in a 911, Bond would have plenty of extra room in front for additional machine gun ammo.

In fact, he should use an SC. Less work for 'Q' - the smoke screen feature is already installed!:D

sweater914 01-16-2002 10:29 AM

Bond was always best in something brit built, be it lotus or aston martin, the BMW didn't impress me much at all, it'd be cool if they bought back the DB-5 for a brief scene as 007's daily driver/garage queen, the DB-5 is still the best car Bond ever drove

911pcars 01-16-2002 11:51 AM

I forget how many millions AM and BMW paid the producers (as well as cars) for product placement. I think it was a bunch. Porsche AG knows where to spend their money more wisely (SUV's?). BTW, does Porsche have an image problem with the general public?

Anyone seen Pearl Harbor? I have not seen it myself but a history buff friend of mine said the got several airplanes wrong and a few ships!

JeremyD 01-16-2002 12:37 PM

Has anybody seen Super Speedway? I got it as a Christmas Present. It was originally an IMAX movie that they have converted to DVD - Has Mario Andretti in it and Indy Cars - sorry no Porsches = but very well done and if you are a speed junkie - very cool in car scenes.

Available from Amazon.com if anybody is interested. I recommend it!

The original Bond books were written in the late '50's- early 60's by Ian Fleming. He drove a 356 (he described the color as battleship grey) in one of the early books when he was "on a mission" in Europe.

gaijinda 01-16-2002 01:05 PM

I always wanted one of those underwater Lotuses....

Saffs 01-16-2002 03:14 PM

He drove a Bentley in the books, too....

howie944 01-16-2002 10:05 PM

Somehow Bond driving a German car seems to me like our Air Force flying Tupoloevs. There was a nasty thing that happened in the early 40s and a lot of Brits (maybe older ones) haven't forgiven the spiked helmet guys across the channel. IMHO Bond needs to drive a Brit supercar. I'm sure "Q" rest his soul, would have found a way to make it reliable. For that matter the Aston takes him back to his Sean Connery roots! Bond's current "love interest" could drive a Porsche. Matter of fact wasn't there one movie where she did? They were at a ski resort or something. Enough rambling. :)

SuperGroove 01-16-2002 10:44 PM

howie944 knows whats up.

The reason why Bond should drive British rather than German, is because some people can't seem to get over that whole nasty WWII thing.

Why were so many people upset over Rolls Royce becoming apart of VW? Rolls Royce was a symbol of England's economical prowess and also a symbolic tool used to fend off the German attack.

Can't use a 911 folks, Bond is a BRITISH spy.
