Here are two pics of why I don't drive my 911 in the winter.

This is my wife shoveling after one storm. Hey equal rights remember ![]() And this is her truck after a different light snowfall [B]Now try to imagine how much SALT they put on the roads to combat this snow On a side note we just got our first storm 2 days ago, 13" ! Those of you who can drive all year, ENJOY for those of us who can't Shawn

Looks like fun. That's exactly WHY I drive in the snow!

I'll have to post some pics of my salt encrusted 911 just to see how many people scream in horror. Oh the humanity.

			Wow so much snow

Rest assured that you will also get a back pain from shoveling all that snow. We got a lot of snow here around new year's eve, but far from as much as you. Anyway my back still aches from shoveling all that snow. I like your equal rights view

While the members of SCWDP are busy digging their cars out of the snow, those of us with early cars are safely tucked away in our garages doing our winter service less a drop of salt tarnish our babies.

Now if we could only get some decent snow here in New England to make it worth while. Nothing but nuisance storms so far this year!

I bet there are a lot of roofs in W NY state with people shovelling on them.

With the mild days of late, that snow weighs a tonne and then some. I am 2 hours away and we have but 6" of snow, and have yet to get a nasty storm this year. Driving the MR2 with 4 snowtires is a hoot, but the salt is nasty for sure.

If one has winter there should be snow. We have not had any here in t.o. yet and I for one would like to see some. Even though I realise that salt is bad for my car I cannot help but drive it as I always hear it screaming "drive me, drive me". You would think with other vehicles to drive I would store it but I cannot. I need my "fix" regularly. After all it is "only a car"

Now I understand why you guys don't drive during the winter. Where I live it doesn't get colder than 45 or hotter than 80, so my car gets plenty of exercise all year round. Bill '79SC |

Don't tell that crap to SCWDP member Bill Krause. His SC lives for snowy weather.

My '73 is in daily service. Just did a 600 mile trip around NY/MA (half of that trip in the snow last week) and seeing continual daily service plus another 500 mile round trip due next week again from MA to NYC.

Doug; I'm relieved to see that your BS detector is still working. I was worried...Actually, I wish my car was galvonized, I can't admit to feeling comfortable about driving it through the (corrosive) elements like SAFFS does. Thankfully, with input from this BBS, I have as much fun working on the car in the winter as I do driving it in the warm seasons. No offense intended.

so, having just purchased a 79 sc without any rust...if I drive it in the snow and salt...does the galvanized body really make a difference or will it turn into a rust bucket? How much (if at all) will it really be compromised. Of course I WANT to drive it, but it seems like the best thing to do is store it. However, in searching on this board, it seems like there's a wide variance in opinion - what's the real deal?

The galvanized cars certainly have a better chance of surviving a harsh environment. But look at the recent posts from the fellow in Scotland whose '85(?)Carrera has some fairly substantial rust damage.

The problem lies with all the places dirt and moisture can be trapped in the 911 body. You can't reach it by normal washing. The galvanizing protects by sacrificing itself until it is exhausted. Another problem also occurs when the thick undercoat Porsche uses is broken. Moisture enters the break, and travels wherever it can. The trapped moisture continues to deteriorate the galvanizing. So, stay away from salty roads, if at all possible. Even then, periodically do a very thorough underbody wash with wheels off, and clean out all the dirt traps.

You will probably see the dirt comig out of the bumper bellows if you jetwash it enough. Once it is clean protect it with freshpaint/wax/polish/sealant as required. See the post by rob justice (use search) for reasons to do this ASAP. In the UK new fenders are £900 for the pair - supply only
