Body work

Among other things I'm going to start tackling some of the rust on my body in the near future along with my manager at work who is apparently quite talented with sheet-metal work.

There's enough rust on the LF fender that he suggested finding a new one rather than trying to repair what's there, but everything I can find is in the $800-1000 range, is that typical, or is there any way to get one for less?

Also, he mentioned it would be good to have a "body manual", I've searched and can't find anything other than normal service manuals. Anyone know a good source for a body manual if one exists?

The price sounds about right unless you get lucky locally. You may want to pull the windshield to examine the lip.

Also, check out sheet metal sources for common rust areas - like Restoration Design. Do a forum search on sheet metal sources. We grafted in a fender, front trunk lip, and windshield repair panel from Restoration Design and it came out great for a lot less than complete panels.

I'll send when I get home tonight.

Does anyone have a source for a body "work manual"?

Ok, completely forgot about the pics, I'll get to it tonight I hope!

Another question I had on this topic... What year body parts can be used for a 73 targa?

For instance can I use a newer front fender and weld in the section that's different at the front, or is it entirely different?

Doors?

etc.

Yes, the later front fenders are the same as the long hood fenders all the way to 1993.

You can weld on the lower signal light/horn grill box but good luck finding the parts unless you make them. If you make them, make a bunch.

If you find the parts to weld on, they will be attached to a good fender. $800-1000 seems high.

The only "bodywork manual" I know of is in the body section of the factory workshop manual.

Thanks,

My headlight bucket area is fine... the rust is about midway up the fender near the lip for the trunk... so I was thinking if I could find a newer fender and cut/weld the forward section of mine on..

The first set is sold, and didn't look to be in much better shape than what I've got..

The 2nd set is intriguing, I'll have to talk to my bodywork mentor on the idea of cutting and welding the lower front section in.
