Uneven rear fender gaps
 

My '78 SC has new Tru-design 9x17 Fuchs with YOKO S drive 275 / 45 / 17 tires. On the right (passenger) side of my car there is a perfect fit with about .250" clearance. On the left side the tire rubs the inside lip of the fender. Is this common with these cars to be different from side to side? I see no indication of a wreck or body repair but I'm no expert. Is there a fix (rolling the lip I suppose)?

That is already a tight fit with 275/45/17 's in the back,although i would think you might have a slight camber diference between your two rear wheels.
I'm pretty sure that if you go with max negative camber on both sides you might be closer to what you want as far as clearance !
I wish i had a couple 275's to try on my car,i'm sure i would find a way to make them fit ... lol

Thanks for the reply; shows you what a newb I am as I didn't even think of the camber. It's so close from on side to the other that camber could be it. I just re-indexed the t-bars to get the car lower and had to dissemble the spring plates and all that. I'm now waiting on the special wrench to turn the concentric that adjusts the height.

The 275s fit perfect on the right side, just had to modify (grind) the camber concentric lock nut a little at the spring plate. They also look really good!

How about some pics of those fat tires on your car !
I went with 255/45/17 's due to a brake upgrade and new wheels,wish i had a 275 at the time just for fitting as i have the room for wider rubber in the back.
Can't wait to wear out my rear Dunlop Direzzas as they also come in a 265/45/17...next purchase !

That is a common problem and what happens when a car is built by hand. A search would turn up a number of posts of people reporting similar rear fender abnormalities.

I had 275/17 on my 1974 w/ SC flares. It was really close both inside and outside. On the passenger side I had to "dent" the oil lines to keep the tire from rubbing on the inside. I also had to trim the outside lip to keep that from rubbing. On the driver side i had to put a 1/8" spacer to keep the tire from rubbing the inside panel. I also had to trim the out lip on the d.s. as well to keep it from rubbing. I still had rubbing issues but at least they were minor.

Getting the car lower though makes a huge difference in looks. It used to look "jacked up" now it just looks bad.

Back at ya; having 17's made for the front this winter, looking for a pair of Fuchs 16 x 6 to make them out of; keep you eyes open.
