Post points replacement

i have a '73 911E 2.4 with MFI. i just spent the weekend replacing plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, and adjusting valves.

i attempted to replace the points, but the existing ones are mounted on the "top" portion of the distributor, and the ones i bought were meant to be mounted on the "bottom' portion of the distributor. i believe i have a bosch distributor, but am not sure exactly how to tell, or whether there is a difference in what side the points mount in the bosch vs. marelli distributor.

it is almost as if the new points are the exact opposite of the old points. am i just missing something? did i get the wrong part?

thanks in advance !

It sounds like you have a Bosch distributor!

There was a mid-year change for the '73 models' Bosch distributor, and the points DO LOOK LIKE MIRROR IMAGES OF EACH OTHER!

You can be sure the distributor is Bosch if you pull it out with the crank at TDC #1. The Bosch name and trademark, and part number are stamped on the outside of the distributor body.

I suggest a thorough disassembly and cleaning job on your distributor. You may want to refer to the diagram in the following thread. Be sure to check end play and axial play of the shaft. If you can 'feel' any wobble or up-and-down play, then the bushings need to be replaced!

i had a hard time finding the right set of points for this car (mounting screw hole on the left side). i tried twice with Pelican and received points with mounting screw hole on the right.

i finally found them at Pep Boys, of all places. they had a Borg Warner part number A-525.

does anyone know the correct Bosch part number for the points that have the mounting bolt on the left side ?

Well, if the points you need look like the following scanned image, then the part number is 1.237.013.062, and belive it or not ... the application on the back of the card says 8.68-7.70 Volvo!

You still have the old set, right? Turn them over and compare the base to the screen view! Those are the correct replacement set for my Bosch 0.231.169.010 distributor.
