painting carbs ok?

Wondering is painting my Zeniths would be a good or bad idea. Would look nice, but any issues with this other than making sure I'm using the gas resistant paint?

I vote bad. Not only for asthetics, which is my own pinion and probaly of little value, but this brings back memories of me painting my calipers on my jeep (black, not yellow or red-its fast enough!) tinking it would make them easier to clean-WRONG! it only took one mishap with a busted hose and shredding caliper paint everywhere. No tllin what the increased ethanol gas, whatever combo will do to that stuff...interestingly enough I did learn that brake fluid cleans calipers way better than brake cleaner!!

Truly poor idea. Dissolving paint in everything. A nightmare. And they will look nice for about 3 days, the time it takes for gas to leak out of them as it always does.

Ok, thought I'd see what experiences people had. Maybe the best idea is to clean them and give them a quick polish with mothers to help keep them clean.

If you take a q-tip with a bit of lacquer thinner to them every month you can keep them looking pretty good.

If you used a 'special' paint like Imron and allowed it to harden for a couple of days it would stand up to just about anything-but the cost, the trouble...
Aston Martin and Rolls Royce used to have black painted SU carbs-I think it was a type of baked enamel. Looks very nice when new but looks like sh** after a few years.

I used a por-15 enamel that paints like glue and flows great so it can be done with a brush. Gotta take carb apart or it'll be glued together big time. A hammer and chisel will be needed to chip it. I just shot and have Imron clear and this stuff is better for the task

its called Pelucid and costs about $30-$40/pint

This pic is from june 2009 and maybe 5 years and 60,000 from when painted new. I just did 32 new 930 caliper hex bolts and expect same results. The carbs were not cleaned for the pic and needs only a wipe with gas or thinner once a year or two

Check out having the carbs re-anodized, I had a local shop do some parts for a restoration I was doing and it was under $100. They come out looking brand new, only problem is they will have to be disassembled. Not a big fan of painting them, one they look painted and second they only look good for a very short time, then they look worse than they did before the paint, but thats just IMHO.

That's Ron's. There is a whole thread about it, but it's an old one. Use his name and "wiring" as search terms.

I did read your post, and it looks as if you found something that works. All I am saying is in my experience I have seen way more that don't look good a year after they are done than do. Anodizing makes them look as they did from the factory and does not add material to the surface, just giving options and my poinion. To me they still look painted.

I am 1000 miles form any coast so I don't have to deal with that salt air. Por-15 is good stuff and it sticks like S#%T to shorts, so if anything is going to work it will be that stuff.
