How does rear window defrost work?

I have an 81 911sc and there are 3 wires that are powered by the defrost switch. 1 goes to the mirrors, 1 to the middle part of the rear window, 1 to the top and bottom of the window. The switch can be pulled and turned to the right a notch.

Is the defrost supposed to do this:
position 1: pushed = off
position 2: pulled = center part of the window and mirrors
position 3: pulled and turned = whole window

Can you check what yours do?
Thanks
David

That's good stuff and I will recheck my wiring tonight, but anybody can tell me what each position of their switch do? I have a coupe and my switch can be pulled and the turned to the right.
Thanks
