Converting SC to 3.2 with DME

Just gauging the various project possibilities......

Assuming one starts with an SC and bad engine.... how difficult is it to convert such a car to be equivalent to a Carrera 3.2? Meaning?---> putting a complete 3.2engine with DME system into a car that once was a 3.0 with CIS ?

...just wondering if anyone did this.

I'm considering this... I know it's been done many times already.

As far as engine swaps go installing a 3.2 engine/DME/DME harness into a SC is pretty easy. The 3.2 engine/DME/DME harness is pretty much a self-contained system.

Basically you'll need to reconfigure a couple fuel line fittings in the engine compartment, drill a hole for the DME harness to pass into the cabin, run a few wires from the DME harness to the front fuse panel, run a wire from the DME harness to the tach, move a few pins around in the 14-pin connector in the rear fuse panel, and make a notch for the flywheel sensor in the 915 trans.

The details of the 3.2 conversion are pretty well documented here on the Pelican 911 tech board.

You need to send the SC tachometer to Hollywood Speedo and have it modified to work with the Motronic.

The scavenge oil line from the wheel well thermostat to the existing engine scavenge line needs to be changed.

The throttle rod from the trans. to engine bellcrank needs to be lengthened.

You can mount the Motronic coil where the existing SC CD box is on the inner left wheelhouse.

The stock SC fuel pump is fine to use.

3.2?.

Do the 3.6......better FI and more bottom end grunt.

Yes. We did it and my husband let me wire it (now THAT's love - LOL). Doing another one now. It's a pretty straight forward swap. The DME and accompanying harness are all stand-alone. You put power to it, tap into your guages (need a 3.2 tach or have yours converted), and most of the wiring is done. Need to build a little extension for the wires in the engine bay at the fuse panel, but that's about it. There is a great set of instructions floating around here somewhere on Pelican (If I can find it, I'll post the link - maybe someone else has it already). I followed them and it worked perfectly except that I used a different fuse in the panel than the writer used.

If I recall correctly, there was one fitting that we changed in the engine bay. You can re use your CIS pump by the way. It is a higher pressure pump, but the 3.2 comes with the correct regulator, the additional fuel just goes back to the tank.

(now if I can ever get my sticky little fingers on a 3.6 muwahahahaa - evil chick laugh)!

Oh - here it is!

Index for Marc's 2.7 to 3.2 Conversion

Trust me - this instruction set TOTALLY works!

Super....filed away for when it's needed....thanks all !

Let me re-open this thread with a slightly different question....I see someone else ( thread title..."My $6k 911"), is transferring a complete DME induction system onto a 3.0 engine that was a 3.0CIS. Different than a complete 3.0-to-3.2 engine swap out.

So....

1.) Any fitment issues of 3.2 intake manifolds., shroud mods, etc....putting 3.2 intake hardware on a 3.0...or are all "hard-mount" points dimensioned the same?
2.) What is a reasonable(+/-) cost estimate to pick up a good, used, 3.2 induction system, including brain/harness, etc.....to allow completion of the conversion of a prior 3.0CIS?

RWebb 10-29-2010 10:41 AM

I know guys have done just that for racing.

Easiest thing is to just swap in the whole motor and sell the old CIS unit. You'd sleep easier re EtOH issues also, IIRC.

Wil Ferch 10-29-2010 12:44 PM

EtOH issues?.....not up to date...Emissions testing and such?

RWebb 10-29-2010 12:57 PM

no - my understanding is that DME can handle EtOH laden gas better than CIS

Wil,

Used that same instruction from Marc when I loaned my garage to a friend to help him put a 3.6 from a '78 SC into a '88 Carrera and then the 3.2 from the '88 went back into the '78. The 3.2 swap into the SC was very simple. However we had the benefit of a DME engine already having been in there, so some of the details were already handled for us like mounting the DME, fuel pump, wire routing, etc. However it still wouldn't have been that hard.

We also got some tips from Steve Timmons for wiring which were helpful. One of his printed instructions I recall well- don't connect the #2 red wire in the ## pin harness connector in the engine bay. It will back-feed the system. Well SOMEBODY who shall remain nameless (NOT me) didn't read that and a ground wire group up by the instruments released the magic smoke REAL QUICK when the key was turned on!!!! :D

Not me either...but I still have that burnt wire, and the car. The 3.2L car that is.

Backdate the heat, and pull off the A/C, and you have a real nice, easy to work on engine compartment too. :)

Waouh,

Almost 9 years after, I reply to this thread as we are going to get a short strock 3.0l (3.2l now) with DME (Motronic) into my 1981 SC.

Thank you for all the advices, links and warnings, those are going to be really helpfull.

........

A product called Tach-Adapt should handle that conversion. Sold by our host and others.
