I have a 1989 3.2 tonight when I got home, I put the car in neutral, and it seemed loose?! and made alot of noise when I wiggled it back and forth?! Just started when I got home! Any suggestions? I have a small video I took of it!
Thanks! Rod

Plastic bushing fell out on the shaft maybe?

Not sure, car runs fine, and shifts fine, just feels loose, and has a rattle now? How do I check that?!
Thanks! Rod

Which gear shift bushing kit is better? The Jwest or the OEM?
Thanks! Rod

From what I can see from the video it looks unrepairable, so I will take the whole car off your hands for a greatly reduced price.
Just kidding, the OEM from our host is as good as any, if you slip the boot off you should be able to see what is going on down there. |

I looked at the boot, it does not appear to come off, looks attached at the bottom?
Thanks!

My boot is not attached at the bottom (although I suspect it should be) but you will need to take the console out and slip the shift knob and boot off with it. Mine has 4 screws at the front and one at the back (just under the carpet by the park brake lever. If you have A/C controls you will have to slip the knobs off and undo the switches from the console, then the whole thing should lift off, it sounds like more work than it actually is, then you will have a view of the whole shift assembly

Thanks! Rod

I can have mine off in 5-10 minutes, so someone who "Actually" knows what they are doing I would think should be able to get it done and back on in an hour. I am assuming that the 89 console is more or less the same proceedure than my 84. I guess it depends on what he finds in the linkage after it is off where most of his time will be.

You think the linkage will need work?

When I say linkage I am thinking bushings in the shifter housing, I am assuming that is where your noise and sloppiness is coming from in your video.

If it is just a cup bushing change in the shift housing, I would think a mechanic should be able to do it in an hour shop time. I installed the factory short shift kit in mine in under an hour and a half and that includes taking the console out and back in (and I don't consider myself speedy). Unless there is something more serious going on down there that may take more time.

I doubt it is anything other than that, as the car runs fine, and can change gears fine as well, it is just loose, and rattling....
Thanks!

You guys are lucky down in the southern US you can drive pretty much year round. I'm squeeking in my last couple rides before the snow flies up here, then its in the garage for the winter. +40C summer -40C winter (thats +104 fahrenheit to -40 fahrenheit for those of you that don't use metric).
Still nice so far, but winter is coming. Good luck with your shifter. |

Thanks, I will know more on Monday, as far as weather goes, we get COLD and SNOW here in KY. I have about 1 month left, then the 911 goes in to storage for a few months!

Hmmmm. Loose and rattling usually doesn't go hand-in-hand with "shifts fine". You're fortunate your car can still be driven. After removing the console, check the threaded pin and lock nut at the front of the shift housing assy. Also check the mount bolts (3-M8) to the tunnel as well as the shift tube support bracket bolts (2-M6)

I thought Kentucky was far enough south that if it snowed they would shut the place down and call in the National Guard. So you get a few months of anticipation as well, its actually a great time to do maintenance, upgrades etc.. so when spring comes we can drive them.
Keep me posted on the shifter. |

Can anyone give me some step by step instructions with some pics on how to remove that console?
Thanks! Rod
