Gas tank questions

Hello all,
I took out the fuel sender on my 69 911E to get a peek inside the gas tank. Looks to be in pretty bad shape. It sat half empty for about 20 yerars. Lots of loose rust and flakes. Looks like a new tank is in my future.
Our host sells a repro tank and also say they can get a genuine porsche tank from Germany. Surprisingly, the genuine part costs substanially less! Has any one had any experience with this? Is there a reason to chose the repro over the genuine article?
Thanks for your advice.

I can't directly answer your question as to why the genuine tank would be less but here may be some possible reasons. Only a guess here but possibly the Porsche tanks are most likely be made for cars 74 and later, meaning they are the larger tank that requires an inflatable spare tire--something you don't have in a 69. These tanks would be made for CIS engines and have a "swirl pot" inside for the return fuel that is pumped back to the tank under pressure--again, something your 69 doesn't have. This type of tank was used by Porsche from 74 to at least 89, maybe longer. The repro tank is probably one that is proper in size and configuration for your car, is not made in large quantities, and is a niche item so the price is greater.

Again, just speculation but you could call our host and ask exactly why the price difference.

Before you spend a lot of money on a new tank, have the one you've got checked out. I had exactly the same problem. My 68 sat for almost 20 years in the PO's back yard. When I pulled the fuel level sensor there were rust-cicles hanging from the top of the tank. I took it to a radiator shop and they cleaned and pressure tested it and then relined it. It's "as good as new" for much less that the cost of a new one.

I bought the repro. After the second was delivered and a little bit of modification it worked great. I think the last poster was right, a genuine Porsche cost about $1,900.

Thanks for the responses! I like MrJTP's radiator shop idea! I'll look for someone in my area.
