Blinkers not working
Winter is here in Montana. Just purchased a new project after the 66" FJ 40 completion. 1979 911 SC. The car is solid but needs work for my desired finish. I am keeping it original for those enthusiast but will add some performance parts as the project gets underway. I have solved a lot of problems such as oil leaks and fuel from the awesome instruction and guidance from this Forum. Therefore, the question. I have taken a lot of notes and making a list of to do's. I am stuck on some wiring. The Blinkers do not work as well as Hazards. When the switch is activated to the right or left the correct lights come on but do not blink. Same for the Hazards. I have checked ground, switch, and replaced relay. Or i think the correct relay under the windshield. I also do not have power to side mirrors. Advice? I have also noticed as all have found that certain parts are difficult to find. I am looking for the right Headlight squirter. Not very functional, I believe, but want the "arrest me red" 911 to look like the original brochure the car came with. Any help would be appreciated as I know once I dig into this over the winter I will be very familar to those on the forumhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1288203735.jpg

Do you have a Bentley? And a multimeter? Gerry |
The indicators lit but not blinking on either side when the switch is activated and the car is not running (which I think is what you are talking about) is normal. This is to alert traffic on very narrow (European) roads that you are parked on one side or the other. At least that's how it works for my '75.
When the car is started and running, then the indicators for the turn signals blink. On my car, I had this issue with no blinky blink until I tracked down a wire from the turn switch that had been disconnected + hidden under the dash. It plugged into the back of the hazard switch and bingo, blinky, blink, blink. Turn signals worked. I'm still chasing down why they don't work when my lights are on at night, but I don't drive this car at night, so that's OK for now. This, hopefully, is a start for you, definitely get the books. There's many, many more reasons why you could be having this problem. Check all bulbs (incorrect bulbs lead to this situation), grounds, connections, etc. Clean and refresh as needed. Good luck. |

If the above conditions are correct, you have no issues. As Winter stated, these are called "Standing Lights" which are mandatory in Germany, and perhaps other countries. Gerry |
Thank you for the reply. I got home and started the car. NO Blinky Blinky. I too was hoping that was it. I do not have a Bentley but everything else. I have done a lot of wiring between all the tractors and other projects I've rebuilt. But this one has me stumped. I do have the books of which some are good and others soso. Any other ideas for the weekend. The FJ was similar but way to gone from the mice. Therefore, a Painless wiring harness it got.

Get a Bentley for the SC, good stuff.....Wayne's books are also excellent.
SC's are famous for turn signal stalk problems...though mostly they screw up on the high low beam function. Have you tried the 4 way emergency flashers? If THAT works it's probably the stalk. If the 4 ways don't work and the fuses are intact it's proably the flasher unit. It's a small can hooked into the signal circuit. I have an 83 and it's not in the same palce as yours.... good luck. |
4 ways stay solid as well. My high beam and low beam are also on the blink. Low beam works as does the "pass" flash. I did see a fix on this site to bend the appendix out which i am currently working on, as well as finding out why I have no power to the side mirrors or Mirror switch on the dash

Is the mirror motor and blinkers on the same fuse? I doubt it.
The fuse cover has the fuse designation on the inside. On the mirror motors, I've found the fuse tends to corrode due to low usage. Try rolling it with your fingers in the receptacle or pulling it and celaning the conacts with emery paper. Blinkers....my call is the flasher unit. |
check the wiring at the back of the emergency sw.
pull the flasher, do the lights still come on? |
I will check the hazard switch tonight. The mirrors and indicators are a seperate system. When I first got the car they didn't work. I have replaced all of the fuses just for assurance and tested each fuse section for power at correct ingition switch location. All of the bulbs are replaced. My only concern is I am not sure of the flasher unit and/or hazard unit under the dash. I did see a picture on another thread that shows two different units. I am wondering if I am missing something completely. Does anyone have a picture from the trunk side to under dash that shows the units?

Bentley says the turn signal/emergency flasher relay is behind the speedo in the dash. I assume it's the same unit. Same for all years.

if you are not sure you changed the right part, change the flasher

I have a 68 early car and my flashers didn't work when I got. During my search for the right parts, I got several wrong items which I believe are for later cars.
Pictured here are two flashers which may be of use to someone. 1. Hella TBB1 Richtungs Warnblinkgeber 96PL-12V 1-4x21W metal cannister with four terminals marked 31, C 49, 49a. I was told is came from a nice car in working order. 2. Wittrin Electronics Flasher 12V Flasher 013309 also marked 914-618-303-11/504 and 17563159 and DE64B3 rectangular ABS black box with metal clip and four terminals marked 31, C, 49, 49a. Looks just like the one pictured above. If one of you Pelicans can use either or both of these I'm willing to part with them for the price of postage. Contact me at bfunke@sc.rr.com if I can help you. Bryan http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1288304399.jpg |
Gerry, Thank you! Per your pictures I am definately missing something. I had to work all night and will attack it this weekend. I am hoping the '86 is similar to the '79. This may help with the power mirrors as well.
