Brake booster & vacuum lines 964

I'm trying to figure out where all the vacuum pipes connect to on an early 964 engine that I'm transplanting into my 1985 911.

I've looked through the Porsche PET and sourced all the necessary pipes (not shown in the photo below) but I can't figure out where each goes. When working from the PET you can build up the 'assemblies' no problem but it doesn't show you where the pipes that lead off the page connect to!

Can anyone help with photos of the pipe set-up on a 964. I've found photos of the later model 964 engine and 993 but they're all a slightly different setup.

Two of the vac lines to the oil tank I have removed and blocked, and installed a catch-can. The other line that would go to the charcoal canister I have also blocked off.

Hey Kroggers, thanks for the photos - I've bodged a few questions onto a few pipes. I think the early and late 964 engines are different and you have the late, I have the early but surely the principles are the same!

I've also stuck a photo of that area of my engine and my pipework up if that's any help?

Cheers mate.

OK, I will see what I can do to help here. Might be better to do this over the phone if you still have some problems...

That is the connection that should go to the charcoal canister - I have it blocked off just on the outside of the picture with a plug.

Taking each question from top down:

.- Looking at your supplied picture at the bottom, I can not see that connection on your intake system either - you do know that the PET has a section for the plastic intake and one for the aluminium intake - did you make sure you looked at the correct one when ordering your stuff? I wonder if your connection for that is the one you have on the back rather than on the side?

.- That silver connector is the same as in the first picture above for the charcoal canister, but without the vacuum lines attached to it.

.- That one gets connected to the intake. If you look at the picture you posted from your engine, you have a black cover on that attachment point.

Taking each question from top down:

.- In the end I attached the canister to the accessory tree where all the connections are made - with the hot air blower fan removed there is a good location for it there.

.- It runs down and under the intake to the back and connects to the black/white valve siting in mid air at the back off the engine (the one you have at the bottom of this picture)

Could you please send me a close-up picture of the helper spring set-up you have on top of the throttle assembly please - I do not have this and having problems with my throttle not returning properly to the idle switch...

Ah, so the black and white valve is simply blocked off? What is the purpose of the carbon canister?

The black cover on the intake is supposed to be there according to the PET (I think), I've attached it - item no's 32 & 33???

I've also attached photos of the throttle spring - any good?

Yes, the one line on the black and white valve is blocked off - the one that would go to the carbon canister. I blocked it off by the accessory tree so that it did not float about so much - but I probably could have done it some other way as well.

The carbon canister is there for emissions stuff and to filter fuel vapors rather than letting them out into the atmosphere...

I think you have identified the wrong part. 32 & 33 on the PET is not the same part that I am referring to. I honestly think this would be easier over the phone

Thank you for the extra photos - I wonder if I can retrofit that spring to my throttle?

You're probably right Kroggers, I'll hook up the parts at the weekend and give you a call sometime if you're still on the same number.

Can't be too difficult to retrofit the spring - all you need is a bracket to fix the other end to. I never noticed thet the later 964s didn't have it.

Good to see you the other day Kroggers, thanks for the help on the big vacuum lines, much appreciated.

Onto the small stuff - can anyone help with what comes down to 4 points on the tiny vacuum lines. I've numbered them below to try to make things easier.

Anybody got any ideas?

(Still can't find helpful photos!)

So, the connections are:-

1. Fuel pressure sender & brake vacuum valve - single outlet to ??

2. Check valve & Vacuum valve - two outlets to ??

3. Vacuum reservior from ??

Alex, I could be wrong, but could it be that 1 should connect to 3 and 4 should connect to 2?

That could well be right mate.

I'm not really getting far with this so I think what I'm going to have to do is pop over to a local Porsche specialist who has an early 964 or a garage that has one for sale & get my head under the hood.

Or just wing it!! 1 to 3 and 2 to 4 does make sense.
