Question Powder Coating at home?

I see powder coating systems dropping in price. Tonight I received a catalog with a Chicago Electric system for $69.99 Anyone try these? I know you need an expendible oven to bake the paint on, but I believe I have also read a heat-lamp will work?

Or is this one of those jobs better left to the pros?

From what I've read, powder coating at home is pretty easy. The problems begin when the wife asks just what you have in the oven?

As one who has had a lot of powder coating done on m/c restorations, I've said this before....

Getting a quality job (that will last) entails *much more* than just dusting on some powder and baking it with any old oven.

If you really want to see what is involved, visit a professional shop and ask for a tour. Most will be glad to give you one and explain the intricacies of the process.

Powder Coating

The system from Eastwood provides satisfactory results. Also depends how much you want to do yourself. Like all other tool purchases, how often will you use it vs. how much does it cost to have it professionaly done. Prep work, as with other finishing is critical. So in addition to the oven you may have invest in a small sandblaster or outsource it. Oven size can be a limiting factor. Some sheet metal parts don't fit in a conventional oven.

All that said, it has been a good purchase and I've used it often with good results.
