Targa bar on a 911 from 1976

Hi.
I have a 911 Targa from 1976, with black painted Targa bar, and I want it to be in polished metal look.

Were all the factory painted Targa bars made of stainless steel ? and can the painting be removed to give it the polished look ?

Thanks.
Torsten

The Targa bar in my 1973 is brushed, not polished. If you want an unpainted one, think about getting a separate one from 1973 or earlier rather than mess with your Targa Bar.

And I might be interested in an extra one to "un-convert" my 76 cabriolet...

Took the black paint off my 77 targa with chemical stripper. Slightly scuff in one direction with Scotchbrite pad after. Looks identical to a factory unpainted bar. None were ever polished, they were all brushed SS.

The silver looks better IMHO. More contrast.

The paint of the Targa bar from my Targa was almost gone when I got the car. So I removed the rest and gave it the brushed look.

Cheers

Exactly my experience as well.

I used a strong stripper, Aircraft Stripper, and the paint literally fell off which is helpful so I didnt scratch the stainless. Looks much better in my opinion.

i was in same debate as mine was beat up.
so when i cleaned to stainless steel it looked amazing but it didn't go well with the black trim theme of my car.
for 100 bucks i had it powder coated black and imo looks amazing.

Stripped mine - just a few hours work well worthwhile I loathed the black look. Removed from car - paint stripper then brushed
