Timing a 2.4
How many of you time you 2.4 to the full 38 deg at 6000RPM? My Owner's Manual says time to 32-38 deg with vacuum disconnected.
Also, how many of you plug and eliminate the vacuun retard completely? Which means time at 6000 and let idle fall around 5 deg BTDC rather than the Factory setting of 5 deg ATDC. If I time mine to 35 deg at 6000(vac disconnected) then reconnect, the idle returns to around 4deg ATDC. If I advance up to 37 deg. the timing falls to around 2 to 3 deg ATDC. A little more advanced then the Factory idle setting. As expected, the car does run better with timing set at 37 deg, but, am I entering a danger zone? |

You always need to be careful when you're setting the upper range of your timing, so if you're confident that 37 is ok and you're not getting any detonation or anything, then leave it there and don't worry about where the idle timing falls. On my 2.4 I do have the retard line connected and my idle timing does fall a little ATDC but I don't think you're doing any harm to your engine if you want to disconnect it and reset your idle rpm.

Gogar, What is your 6000 RPM timing set at? If I time mine at 5 deg ATDC at idle, then disconnect vacuum at 6000 I only get 33deg. That is within the range, but the car pulls better in the 35 deg range. At 37 deg I don't hear or feel detonation. I just cleaned and lubed my dist. and that helped me to advance a little more at 4500 RPM up to 6000. I'm now getting 33 deg at 4500 when timed to 35 deg at 6000. Prior to cleaning 4500 was only 31 deg. Max advance seems to stop 55/5700RPM.
