Hibernation
I am a newbie. Have read hundreds of topics on this forum and feel I am somewhat knowledgable enough to finally post.
I just bought a 77 911S that has been hibernating since 1989. It has only 22K on car. Here is what I have done so far: 1. Clean tank very well 2. New fuel Pump 3. New injectors 4. Clean out all fuel lines. 5. Rebuilding fuel distributor(per this forum)Plunger stuck. 6. New accumulator 7. New Spark Plugs 8. New Fuel Filter Soon to do: 1. oil change 2. cap/rotor 3. Valve adjustment I got it started and had terrible miss. Messed with air plate to check fuel. Turned it over and backfired very loud out exhaust. Will not run now. I checked the forums for backfire and viola that it is many stoies of horrible backfires but coming out the airbox and blowing it up. So I looked at my airbox and it doesn't look like the plastic ones with retrofitted popoff, but a metal with built in popoff. I asssume it is from a newer 80's car. The only invoice for repair was a new airbox in 1989! Imagine that. So my main question is there anything else that would cause what I believe to be a unmetered air leak? I will also check for cracked rotor/cap. What causes the exaust backfire as most are having intake backfire? Thanks for letting me ramble. / |

All good stuff you have listed.
check the line to your power brake reservoir for the air leak. dont forget about the brakes, it will need a complete flush and the calipers cleaned up and exercised. check for mice in the motor maybe look through the fan for any signs of critters. also im sure you know but the tires are probably junk as well. congrats on your find cheers ed also check and see if the sensor plate is moving freely.

The car is amazing condition except the silver paint is very sun burnt.
![]() Absolutely rust free and dent free. Mainly needs paint and seals. Interior is great. Front trunk area is like new. The spare tire even has BF Goodrich Baggie. Little NOS air compressor in box, tool kit has never been opened and still in its PORSCHE baggie ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Nice!
Find a good a good paint or detail guy to look at your paint. It may be able to be polished back to a nice glossy finish. Good luck with it!

Perma-tune?
I think I have determined NOW I have a f'd up perma-tune ignition. It ran horrible with misses. Then barely at all and now no spark. I have power to the middle of the 3-pin connector(red) but nada any where else. Finally get fuel and now this. I did the ohm readings and my ohm is't qualified for the job.
Is there a way to test the output of the cd units? Oh yeah how come finding a replacement is so tough? Every one snags them up for resale/rebuild? |

And you are sure it is the permatune and not the wires. Seems likely, but wires and caps can cause backfires.

Looks like a great project car.Nice find.
I sometimes wish I had the skills to take on a restoration such as this. A rust free car will make it so much easier. |

Ready to fire it up again
OK, I took out the injectors and put in jars. I had all kinds of spray patterns and mega-volumes. I did the taboo and tore into FD. I had three torn o-rings. Replaced and tried now only one injector spraying crazy amounts of fuel. Tore apart and had one torn o-ring. Tore it apart again. No problems with volumes. Had leak between halves. Tore it apart again. Resealed and now NO LEAKS(yet)and VOLUMES are very equal. I guess I might of had some success on the FD.
- Control pressure started @ 12 psi and rose steadily to 24 psi during test of injectors. - Primary pressure was 65 psi - Took off vacuum hose to brake booster and plugged manifold. - Installed new BERU wires. - Changed oil Now I only need some luck and this thing will fire again tonight. ![]() |

Running problems
When a car sits for a time, dissimilar metals corrosion can set in. Especially corrosion prone are the ground connections from the engine/transmission case to the body. These kind of problems cause many symptoms and result in burned out electrical parts like starters, alternators, fuel pumps, ignition boxes, batteries ect. You do not want your car to start eating parts over a lousy $5 ground wire.
Here is a link to what to look for, scroll down to "Ground Circuit" under the Diagnostics Guide section. Also this page has a bunch more information on these old Porsche cars found nowhere else. [url=http://www.permatune.com/911SC902tech.html] |

Yes I have put around 500 miles on it.
Cleaned up very nicely except the silver paint is toast. Runs perfect. Doors shut like new. Top redone by CARINC, turned out great. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

And the spark issue that I never answered was plug wires. With the old wires I could see lightning where the wires were touching. Replaced and left original Permatune in and fired up perfectly.
Oh yeah I ended up yanking engine and tranny so I could replace the valve stem seals with heads still on engine. Very same symptoms of bad guides, but with 22k I knew they weren't worn. The white stem seals were rock hard. I replaced with black rubbery ones and no decel smoke at all. Bought the valve spring compressors from our host. They worked great. NO HEAD REMOVAL. Removed thermal reactors(WHAT A *****!!!). 8 broken exhaust studs later. Bought the stud drilling tool from pelicanite and works absolutely amazing. Every hole was great threads. Removed smog pump and air injection stuff. Still have just in case. To sum it up I ended up performing many undesirable tasks the veteran mechanics on here say don't do. I ended up doing tons of research on similar problems and took upon myself to figure it out. ![]() ![]()

Are you planning to do the chain tensioner upgrade with oil supply/return tubes?
Impressive care taken in your project - carry on.

You have done excellent work. Please add one item to you list:
Replace your 5 blade fan with the 11 blade one for adequate cooling.......G'luck
