Pertronix and 008 distributor AGAIN

I considered installing a Pertronix in my 73.5 (CIS 2.4 T) motor a while back, and I am finally ready to do it.

I did ask this question before, here:

Pertronix for 008 distributor?

And, thanks to all. I did order the 73.5-77 Pertronix unit (1867A) as suggested in the previous thread:

Pelican Parts.com - Pertonix Ignitor

And I am having a problem fitting the ignitor in my distributor.

In another distributor thread I found some data from Warren stating this:

All '72 models, and some early '73 models used:

2.4 T --> Bosch 0.231.169.003 -- 6500 rpm rev limiter
2.4 E --> Bosch 0.231.169.004 -- 7100 rpm rev limiter
2.4 S --> Bosch 0.231.169.005 -- 7300 rpm rev limiter

Using 'mirror image points' ... later '73 models used:

2.4 T --> Bosch 0.231.169.008 -- 6500 rpm rev limiter
2.4 E --> Bosch 0.231.169.009 -- 7100 rpm rev limiter
2.4 S --> Bosch 0.231.169.010 -- 7300 rpm rev limiter

And, indeed from my pic I may assume that my 008 does have "mirror image points" from many pics I have seen when searching. (points pivot on the left, points gap on the right. Clockwise rotating distributor.)

I had a hard time fitting the ignitor (with or without the spacer plate), and I noticed the tab on the spacer plate indeed is on the 'wrong' end of the plate to fit the points mounting hole for my 'mirror image points'.

Does anyone have a definitive answer if I should try ignitor "1863" instead of 1867A which I have tried and can't make fit?

Or, am I missing something?

Thanks!

According to the Pertronix Catalog the Pertronix you have is from MAY 73 up. Your serial numbers should tell you if you are that late in the production year or not. Being a CIS car you are probably that late. But it doesn't preclude a PO changing the distributer. Have you checked the number?

Well, the (1867A) pertronix I received from PP says:

For Distributor No: 0-231-184-001, 002, 003, and 004.

Which, (obviously, now ) Will not fit my distributor:

No: 0-231-169-008.

Unfortunately, this middle series of numbers, (0-231-XXX) isn't really specified in the PP online catalog for the item I ordered, the 1867A (73.5-77 MY) pertronix. Not very specific.

But, I rolled the dice since I too, thought (CIS motor, 73.5-77, which means CIS cars, etc.)

SO:

I'm beginning to think that I do in fact need the pertronix model 1863, which will fit the distributor series:

0-231-169-xxx series of distributors, including 009 and 010, which (from the info I got from Warren's post, are nearly identical to 008, even though 008 is not specified.)

Time will tell; I have ordered an 1863 and crossed my fingers.

I went through the same process, but I needed the 1973.5 and got the wrong one.

Pertronix upgrade has been the best $100 I have spent on the car........really don't miss those points.....much the opposite.

Great modification!!! Once you get the right one installed be sure you good clearance between the Pertronix unit and the dist cap. I had to sand my module a bit.

update

Ok, so I got my 1863 in, and let me say with no hesitation that

Pertronix 1863 is the correct one for distributor 0-231-169-008

and Pertronix 1867 is for 0-231-184-001, 002, 003, and 004.

So, you may have a '73 motor with EITHER one of these distributors, and neither the Pelican Parts web-catalog NOR the Pertronix catalog list the 008,

(and you may be tempted to order the 1867a, like I did)

But the 008, 009, and 010 are nearly identical.

Thanks!

I just installed the dizzy and started the car for a minute to make sure it worked at all, and I set my timing. So . . . It's hard to say. I need to drive the car for a while to know.

Did you fuse your pertronix?
