Alternator Question for '74
Replacing the Alt in my '74.
Here's the issue. The studs on the rebuilt Alt, are approx 1/2" shorter than the studs on the one that I took out. So, there is nothing revealed on the back side to attach the air duct or a nut for that matter it's so short. I'm thinking that I switch out the studs, yay or nay? |
I would return it for the right one.

I recently had a 55A Sev/Marchal rebuilt locally, and the rebuilder was relieved that my studs were in good shape (they're often hammered for removal from the fan housing), because they're allegedly hard to get. I didn't try looking myself, but it may not be so easy as to just swap them out.

The studs aren't too short, the alternator is the wrong one for the housing. Try fitting the fan on the shaft, you will find it sticks out too far.
What is the casting number on your fan housing? |
You are correct sir! Upon closer inspection the housings of the Alt's themselves are different. The old one is about 1/2" shorter than the replacement. Studs are the same length...time to make a call and get the right one. Thanks!

Ok, so I'm replacing this: Pelican Parts - Product Information: AL-9341-X
With this: Pelican Parts - Product Information: 911-603-120-04-M262 Which will require some wiring modifications, which I'm ok about but wouldn't mind another set of brains to double check my work. Any Pelican's near the Tacony-Palmyra bridge care to help sometime next week when I get a chance to work on this? Send me a PM, thanks! |
Update: Turns out Pelican doesn't sell the one that fit's my car. I tracked down a used one, and will be getting my other one rebuilt as a spare. For future reference, I have included pictures of the stud length of both the Alt that came off my car (42mm) and the replacement that didn't fit (31mm). The one's with 31mm stud length are easy to find, the 42mm not so much :-)
The housing is a 5R http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1289565252.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1289565309.jpg |
Where are you getting the other one rebuilt? The local shop here that does rebuilds says they cannot get the parts anymore (unavailable).

I found a guy in Pittsburgh via the Pelican Forum, Stellar Generator, who has done a couple recently. Or I might try a local guy in Trenton NJ who was recommended to me by the fellow I bought the used Alt from. The Pittsburgh guy says he has to order parts from Germany or Hungary depending on what's needed....

Thanks. I called Stellar today and will probably ship it there for a rebuild.
