SC engine in an early car - what do I need?

So my 2.4 MFI was getting tired so I picked up a 3.0 liter to install into my 73 911. I plan on using the CIS (I know, I should go to PMO's but cash is tight). I have purchased the following:
Fuel pump
Fuel accumulator*
MSD ignition*
Complete intake to exhaust tip
I also understand I will need an SC tach. What else will I need? Thanks in advance, Mark

Thoughts....what are some of the areas to watch out for with this conversion? How about the engine weight...do I need to up the torsion bars? I am currently running stock carrera bars from an 84. Thanks, Mark

Hey Mark,

Try following this guide to when adding the 3.0 into your chassis:

Index for Marc's 2.7 to 3.2 Conversion

I hear it's basically the same thing but do your research.
You should be ok with all the 84 Carrera Stuff it's a vast improvement over the earlier stuff.

I would highly recommend an Oil cooler if you don't have one.
Currently I have a lead on shop who has a couple of brand new fender mounted Oil kits that include everything to replace a Trombone cooler. Priced at $400 I can pass the info along (new, cheaper than used Carrera type)

I'm upgrading to a 3.2 on my 83 911sc and upgrading the suspension to 86/88 Carrera
Torsion bars, Sway bars, New bushing all the way around (don't know if I need them Since I already have the gear just need to check the condition of items

What I would recommend you get is

101 Porsche Projects (if you don't have it just for fun)
How to rebuild your 911 engine. book (lots of good easy pointers)

New Ignition cap
new Spark plugs
New Rotor
New ignition wires ( I have some MSD ones)
new Valve cover gaskets (with the green bead)
Oil temp Seal
sachs or better Clutch kit (through out bearing)
Lightweight flywheel(or standard )
Cat by pass
Misc gaskets/bushings (but and ebay kit and mix it up with some quality OEM parts for the vital stuff)
new Engine mounts (inexpensive Club sport type)
new fan belt
proper oil
Cylinder head stud kit
misc oil lines
Anything that needs to be done while its out.

Machine work
Valve adjustment
964 cams?
Clean/check tensioners
Maybe Oil tubes
Clean injectors if you are keeping the System

If you ever got $2000-25000 laying around you can get a Vario ram system >
For more power...with Dual plug system....ahhhh

Weight can't be that much more especially since the hot air fan is missing.
Maybe the exhaust has a few extra pounds...get some SSI headers

Then later on Upgrade your brakes because your gonna need the extra stopping power
I'm on the line for Modern Brembo brake kits @ $1100 Front and $1300 Rear
Both front and rear brake kits fit in 16 and 15in wheels.....most folks these days run these..and can be purchased all over the web.
I just got a few sources for cheaper ones

Used Brembo calipers
New Brake kit (coated SS lines, metric ,washers,CNC lightweight adapter mounts)
New performance brake pads
New Drilled vented Carrera 24mm Rotors (84-88)

As for the Tachometer...not sure if you need SC....?
I'm keeping my SC tach and taking it to a local Speedometer shop(Hollywood Speedo) to be modified for a 3.2 Conversion. Not sure if the 2.7 Tach with work with the 3.0....It should, but maybe read up on it in the Archives.

We are pretty much doing the same upgrades
If you need any help let me know I can point you in the direction to get some of this stuff. Alot of it is in our used parts forums as well....

Good luck with the build

On another note your engine should be ready to ship before the end of the week.
Ive been taking photos and a Full time lapse video of the engine drop/removal/inspection should be on the way as well. Your mechanic should be able to fix this engine cheap enough to off set the cost of a perfect used one
