Labor Estimate -- Replace 1989 Carrera Clutch
My 1989 911 Carrera was stolen and quickly recovered, but not before the clutch was burned out. What's a reasonable estimate of the hours it takes to replace the clutch?

$1200 on the low side to 2k on the high side with some performance upgrades. You can save yourself alot of money by doing it yourself, but if you have never dropped your engine before I don't know if I'd advise it.

This posting after being edited is not even close to my original. I had asked two questions: 1) how would one describe optimal clutch feel/effort for a new or nearly new clutch on a 1989 Carrera( which was replaced by the shop from which it was stolen), and 2) could anyone recommend loss of value specialists in the Albany NY area (relating to the theft of this car).

In my experience, even the non-hydrolic clutches, should be quite soft on the pedal, and require very little effort after being installed properly. My mechanic says that his customers often complain after he has installed a new clutch that the effort is too soft and does not feel right. He convinces them that if everything is aligned properly, the clutch will require very little effort at the peddle. Hope that helps. Sorry about your theft problem!

Get the car appraised. I can't recommend anyone as I'm on the West coast.
Clutch effort on an '89 is constant and about the same as any other model. But, the release is different. Some who drive a hydraulic operated clutch for the first time don't immediately like it. I've trained myself to shift slightly later after pushing the clutch in than with the other cars. On most cars you can begin to move the shift lever as you begin the move the clutch pedal down. Not with a G50 and the hydraulic unit. |
