silly question from newbie, but what's this?
 

Torsion bar inspection cover. At least that's what I think it's called. Someone more knowledgeable will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong. Welcome aboard by the way.

I don't think you need to call it an inspection cover, but you sure won't get the bar out w/o having the cover removed.

So, would you call it a torsion bar removal access cover?

as long as you know what the door above it's for, you're good to go. how about some more pics of that 4 door 911.

You have a '72 sepia brown 911with '73 rubber bumpers. Interesting. Going to dump that "color" to something else? I did the same with my '72 911T sepia brown 10 years ago.

Turd brown looks good when fresh......horrendous when not kept up.

The guy I bought my car from told me that was where the flux capacitor was located. No?

Zotman, when you say 73 bumpers, is that an option order or were they replaced at some point? The car is supposed to be all original.

I found this image of a sepia brown 72. it's a little shiny, but looks nice. i hope to get mine in this shape. im starting this winter with the strip down of chrome, etc. newbie at all this, but should be fun. i posted a question about strip down. thanks all for the responses. seems doable for me. i also found a media blasting shop. im taking it down to metal. good thing about living in MI is that there's a mechanic and body shop on every corner.

FWIW, Sepia Brown seems to be a love / hate thing with P-car owners.

Chalk me up as a "lover". She'll look great after you freshen her up.

Good luck with your project. That sepia car that you posted was recently for sale in NorCal IIRC - an absolutely stunning example.

There is a decent contingent of early 911 enthusiasts in the Midwest. Look us up on the Early 911S Registry.

Hard to tell from that picture, but I think he might have said that because your car normally would have chromed bumperettes with a rubber strip to protect them, like the gorgeous picture of that 72 above. Yours kinda sorta look like the 73.5T all rubber bumperettes, but shorter - maybe that's what they had in 73, I'm no bumperette expert (just owned a 73.5 and a 69, the 73.5 ones are ugly, they stick out way too much). Again, hard to tell from that photo, maybe I'm off base...

What is "short" about this car? It has a long hood and long wheelbase.

Great to see that the original poster is keeping it Sepia.

I believe that there were multiple changes throughout the 1972 production year. Some later 1972 911s have different seatbelt receptacles, rubber bumperettes, black horn grills, etc. compared to earlier 1972 911s.

As I repaint/restore this car, here's a few questions i have....

- my engine grille cover is grayish, not dark black like the photo of the mint 72. should i paint it black?

- what kind of paint is used on the wheels? i was going to blast them clean and repaint.

- i posted this one before, but is there a manual or step-by-step guide for dismantling the car? seems straightforward (bumpers, chrome, lights).

appreciate any help. when i get started, i'll do my best to chronicle my adventure.
