83 911 Production Cab #10
|
Since the engine will be out and I will be changing the clutch cable and replacing the bushings, I was thinking about installing a Short Shift Kit while I'm in there...
I do about 2 Hrs of track a year and the rest on the road most of it in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I do find the long throw a bit annoying. I'm leaning toward the Weltmeister Short Shift Kit vice the Porsche one but could be convinced... Porsche 911 & Carrera Shift Linkage - Page 3 Any Pro or Con? Thanks J.J.

The Weltmeister is too short. I had it. Changed to the factory kit and it was much better. If it is too short, you will have trouble finding the gears and put too much force into the shifts. Generally, the Weltmeister prodcuts' quality is poor. Except for their rack spacer ('bump steer') kit, which is essentially only a set of bolts with washers, I would not recommend a single piece of equipment they make.

I had a weltmeister in my car and it found its way to its rightful home called the trash can. You will damage your gearbox with that shifter. Aigel is 100% correct. If its a street car go factory short shift and be done with it.

Rennshift if you have the dough.

Weltmeister stuff just plain sucks.
I went with Wevo and never looked back. Welcome to Windrush Evolutions - WEVO - Porsche Products |

I absolutely love my Rennshift. Also upgraded with the Wevo shift coupler. Best improvement and bang for the buck I have done to my 82SC.

I have the Weltmeister and its too notchy and short. If you could find a factory short shift that would be my choice or any of the WEVO offerings.

just installed a factory kit and new bushings 2 nights ago and it is a whole new car. it will take some getting used to but it feels much better and i like the shorter throw. with my old setup i had sort of a two-step shift into first, sort of like a clunk feeling as i went into first and then it went a little more with a final clunk (ok, clunk is not the best term to use but it works). now it is just a straight shot single clunk and i am in. getting into 3rd and 4th will require a retraining of my mind/arm but overall i am happy.

OK, Hear You Loud & Clear
Since Weltmeister seem to have won the Crapola survey... It's out of the equation.
Since I'm already in the 2011/12 budget, it will be either the factory kit as recommended by aigel, Rodsrsr and Rodsrsr for now or wait for the 2012/13 budget season for an EVO or Rennshift as recommended by tobluforu, Spede and rtorres... Maybe I'll ask the wife to break the deadlock ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks guys A couple more endorsement (ErVikingo and nineball for the factory kit since I typed this... Great i don't have to ask my wife ![]() ![]()

The factory short shift kit uses epoxy to hold the shift lever to the shifter and they always fail. If you get one, have it welded in. Or go with the Wevo or Rennshift.

I have the Factory Short Shift in my 915 and I'm happy with it. The throws are shorter but understand that you are still dealing with a 915 so do not expect miracles. Make sure you replace ALL of the linkage bushings (front and back) at the same time and that plus the shorters throws will make you happy.
That said, I just helped my buddy put in a Wevo into his track turbo......that's what I'd do if my wallet was more like his
