MFI Question....

I have a 72 T with a MFI 2.4.

How tight should the belt be in the injection pump? I reached back there to check it out and there is a bit of slack in it. It also occured to me that it is at least 3 years old.

Do these fail?

How often do folks change them?

How hard are they to change?

Does pump timing get altered when changing or adjusting this belt??

It's a cogged belt so it can be pretty slack and still work. If you don't see any cracks in the belt I wouldn't worry about it. It is not that hard to change and as long as you don't turn the engine over or move the drive gear on the MFI pump, it will stay timed when you change the belt out.

I just changed mine recently. If your pump still has the "devil" bolt in place you might have a hard time. (This is the one under all the injector lines on the driver's side of the pump, closest to the rear of the car.) The basic concept is to remove the engine sheet metal covering the belt, loosen all the mounting nuts for the pump, scoot it left and release the belt. Installation is the reverse of removal... Be sure to put the camshaft end of the belt on first as that sprocket has ridges on the outsides. You might have to undo some injector lines to make life easier.

Haynes said to remove the left side heat exchanger to do this. Don't!!

Is there any trick to taking off injector lines?

While I'm at this job I might consider replacing a few gaskets on my pump. It is seeping some oil off the left side. Every tackled that one???

The injector lines take a 17mm flare nut wrench. You may need to hold the injector or MFI pump outlet with another wrench to keep it from turning if things get stuck. Be careful with them and wait for the engine to cool down first. You will inevitably get gas everywhere so take appropriate precautions. I haven't blown myself up yet and I've taken that system apart 3 or 4 times now.

You can apparently order gaskets from Pacific Fuel Injection, but Warren has advised in a previous thread that some locktite sealer or a homemade gasket will also work.
