Billet differential side plate

Excuse my ignorant tranny question, but if I bought one of these and wanted to install it, what has to be done? In other words, do I have to open up the transmission to do this?

Yeah, that tutorial is the real nuts & bolts of it. Long story short is you have to replace the bearing & it's matched race that is pressed into the side cover. When you replace the bearings and side cover, you have to reset the bearing preload with the appropriate amount of bearing shims. As Pete also points out, ring & pinion backlash is effected as well. Backlash is pretty important. Every instruction i've seen on ring & pinion says always always always check backlash for correctness.

Pete Z. clearly knows his stuff when it comes to the 915 trans. His tech articles are as by the book as they come. You could shortcut it, and things will probably turn out fine in terms of it won't instantly explode. But you'd likely end up with some noise and reduce the longevity of the carrier bearings and worse yet, the ring and pinion.

If I may ask, why do you think you might want one of these?

I'm going to be installing another tranny in my car and thought that while it was out I could add some strength. That's not going to happen now as it's way over my head.
Thanks

Another question, I'm going to be installing a 75 tranny in a 72 and I'm pretty sure it takes a different clutch cable as pelican shows two for the 75. How do I figure out if I need an early or late cable. Also, is there anything else I need in regards to the clutch mechanism or is the clutch arm on the side of the tranny the same as my 72. I do not have the 75 in hand so not sure what I need, but want my ducks in a row.
Any other help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I'll check but you may be able to use your clutch arm on this trans and not have to change anythink else.

Another question in regards to Flywheels: Mine is org and I want to replace it, but when I check Pelican it shows different fly wheels for my 72 then when I look under 74 and above? What year Fly wheel is compatible If I have a 72 motor and a 75 tranny, am I over thinking this?
Thanks
