Should I lower it?

I'm getting ready to put my SC away for the winter and figure while it's down I might do a few projects, one of which would be lowering it. I'm torn because I know it's a lot of work and money and I can't seem to figure out how much I should lower it, if any. I just put on Bilstien Sports all around (3 weeks ago) as well as Rotas. I was thinking if I do it I may install a set of adjustable spring plates so there is some wiggle room in the future. Advice and opinions welcome

Here's how it sits today

^ +1 - I recently lowered my '77 and it looks and drives so much better - new bilsteins sports, turbo tie rods and a bump steer kit to adjust the front end. BTW - The rear plates were the most difficult but I was able to use the original ones and mine turned out just fine - I like the way it sits evenly front to back.

Only downside is if your streets are full of craters suspension will tend to 'crash'

Car was not designed to be at the US height. Lower the car, get used to it and see what your thoughts are when you see a US height 911. You will say to yourself "That car needs to be lowered".

Also, what is the huge expense? Rack bushings? You don't have to get adjustable spring plates and you are not required to get a 4 corner weight balancing/alignment.

This has been beat to death but I can't resist beating it some more.

The 83SC was essentially the same height as a ROW car.

All 911's after 1977 had adjustable spring plates.

A corner balance/alignment IS required, if you want the thing to handle well, not lock up a brake caliper early on one corner, etc.

Carry on,
JR

I was thinking of lowering mine, but even as it is, the nose contacts pavement going into and out of even slightly steep driveways, even when I'm being really careful, which these days is always. So I've decided to live with it at its present height. Your results may vary.

Like Reifle, +1 for sure! The front is close, the rear needs some help. You might have enough room on the plates to make it happen rather inexpensively!

mickey, Its looking sharp. I moved into a new house a few years back and the front lip has 1/2 inch clearance the way the driveway and curb are designed. I actually took the car out to the house and measuered it befroe I bought the place.

Lower looks good but sometimes can cause problems.

Nice wheels.

You l;ive in Del. and your putting it away ? shame on you. DRIVE IT on every nice day you can . Sheesh winter's enough of a hassle itself ,why deny it a chance to rip up the cold winter roads evrey once in a while. And one more admonition before wine thirty ....How would you like standing in one place all winter long ?

Re rid height lower a bit, borrow the scales and corner balance it your self ,then find a competent shop to alligng it.
PS mine is similar to yours.Have fun
Also a bit high 25 1/4" 251/4"

javadog - No argument with the alignment. That is a must do. The corner balancing is something I did not do and have suffered no issues - street driving only. However, I don't know enough to argue the point and have never had my car corner balanced so I don't know what I am missing.

OP also mentioned buying spring plates in the initial post.

I think this is the perfect height.

The adjustable spring plate consideration was in hopes of being able to allow the same suspension travel but still be able to lower it a tad in the rear. I figure if I'm going all that way why not have a little more adjustablity for fine tuning etc... (yes, $300 for a set is nothing to sneeze at but what's it gonna cost me to get it "just right"?) or maybe I'm way off on my assumption?

And as for the winter storage - no worries, it'll just be going in a garage for the winter, with easy accessablilty. I live in the city and have to park on the street so it would be submitted to the elements all winter. My drive to work is only 4 miles which is not enough to even get the car to operating temp on cold days. That said, it will get plenty of attention when I have to go to Philly or Reading.

Be warned, lowering it too much and depending on your how straight your chasis is, it may effect the min/max camber adjustment.

For my baby she was in a previous accident and PO never properly straightened her out so my camber adjustment is at it's max at front. I will need to raise her a bit to take out the too much negative camber up front.

I have 25.25 X 25 to obtain a slight aggressive stance but will probably have to settle with the Euro Height if I want to save my tires a bit.

I can upgrade to a camber adjustment plates but need to save for Xmas presents :-)

Michael,

Come and visit me before the weather gets too cold. We could lower and adjust the ride height to your heart's desire. We'll also do the wheel alignment and corner balance.......just buy me a large size pizza and root beer!!!! And give me a free golf lesson and we'll call it even. PM me.

Tony
