Removing Fuel Filter: Which Direction to twist top nut?
 

I'm removing/replacing the fuel filter in my '83 911SC. As usual, it's my first time doing this on this car. I just want to make sure I'm torquing the top nut in the proper direction because it's frozen tight (like everything else on this car) and I don't want to end up replacing fuel lines and make this more complex than it should be.

Top nut loosens counter-clockwise, bottom nut is held in place, correct?

Yes, that's right, counterclockwise with nut furthest from filter - flats on filter are for holding it in place as you turn the compression nut of the hard fuel line.

Some folks have more luck setting the wrench handles "close" to one another so that the effect is as pushing two handles together.

Go carefully - I put a rag underneath, loosen top first, then undo strap screw, then finish at the bottom.

you need to use a flare nut line wrench 17mm this is a special open end wrench that is almost closed off except with a slot for fuel line to pass thru. check host for tool then from top connection while counterholding the bottom nut on fuel filter 19mm wrench turn top flare nut counter clockwise or to the left to loosen top line nut.same procedure on bottom line nut but remember now you must turn nut clockwise to loosen because you are upside down always use flare nut line wrenches to avoid rounding over the flare nuts on fuel lines. also put a little antisieze on the fuel line flare nuts to ease future removal. regards tom

Well my local Ace Hardware and NAPA Auto Parts didn't have those tools, so I just tried WD-40 and the nuts unfroze. I have my new 2010 filter in and it's satisfying because the old filter is dated 2003.
