Cheap 993's and 996's!?!

Looking around on ebay, I've noticed that there are a lot of newer model 993's and 996's with low mileage that are selling for prices that are ridiculously less than a year ago. The market seems to be flooded by a lot of these newer P-cars right now. It seems like a lot of these people that have purchased SUVs or luxury or sports cars are feeling the bite financially or are getting sick of them now that the yuppie trend of buying less than practical vehicles seems to have subsided. At this rate, I might even be able to afford a 993 or 996 in a few years. Take a look at a few of these that have sold recently:

Wow, 1996 C2 with 33k miles for $36k...that's a good price, even for eBay. Yeah, it's true about the price reductions. I still remember last year, about the same time (Jan 2001), '97 993s were going for at least $58k, and I had my eye on two '98 C2S ($72k, $69k). I guess prices are still high at some places (rpm sportscars in Houston has great examples, but all are way too expensive), and some guys in the Bay Area still think their 993s are still worth $65k (probably because they bought them for $80k.

Absolutely, most "newer" cars have been hit severely...check out the going price of C5s, Vipers 355s and Boxsters e.t.c. I also wonder if the new C4S/Targa & 3.6 engine has had some sort of impact on 993 prices.....I personally know of 2 people who were on the fence with 98 C4Ss and went with the new C4S (made me happy, more of them for us aircooled guys Interestingly enough, I have found that vintage cars including Vettes, Hemis and Cobra Replicas have not taken the same hit....I assume its because its a different buyer combined with supply....

Another thing....the stock market mania was peaking roughly three years ago...(the final peak was about 2 years ago) ..and the cars that are coming off 3 year lease deals are coming on the market now.

Check out the seller's feedback on the 1999 C2. The seller didn't complete the auction and his excuse is that the reserve price was a mistake.

Wouldn't the buyer be able to go after the seller on this one? Isn't a final auction a binding contract if the reserve is met?

Since looking for about a year for my car by searching every known forum, (classified, ebay, car lots, dealers, etc), I have never been able to stop checking out all used 911's. Which brings me to a couple points: These prices are actually more inline with what an actual used car of this type and year should go for. Porsche's, for several reasons, are alway overinflated for used car prices. Unfortunately, it is one of the first cars some buy to show, "look at me, I have money", and then sell because of financial troubles. I guess that's what always puzzles me when I see an add about "having baby, must sell". Brother, if things are that tight, you might want to consider your entire financial situation.

This situation only bodes well for the actual car enthusiast which we are. There is absoulutely no reason why a car that sold in 1996 for $55,000 (I don't know what they were new) should sell for $45,000 6 years later other then people are willing to pay it. Did you ever notice how few used car dealers even carry Porsche's at least around here (Pittsburgh). Wholesale dealers from Fla or CA will pay way over what they can sell these car retail in this area. Well, maybe thats changing. Look for the 996 prices to plummet big time, especially since they just increased the HP on the new ones. And never, ever sell you older 911. Keep it forever and give it to your kids. I am tinkering with the idea of getting a 993 for a commuter car some day when the price falls were I want it, but it could never replace the old school 911.

Just found a few more 993s that sold for very reasonable prices on eBay, assuming they were in decent shape. Why does this always happen when I don't have any money available.....Maybe in a couple more years I'll be able to............

when it comes to the 993 value diminishing, another reason i see these vehicles dropping in price is because there are new cars that can perform just as well. a few years ago a person might think that a Porsche was on a performance throne that only a few cars could reach. there have been upgrades in performance to even the entry level vehicles of today that are really giving cars like the 993 a run for it's money.

today, you can buy many vehicles still under warranty that will turn in lap times similar to, or possibly better than, the 993. there are also many aftermarket modifications that can be done to new vehicles or older Porsches that will make the 993 performance seem lacking. for 1/3 the price, a $12,000 1990 944 turbo will make a faster, better handling, and easier to upgrade track car. performance upgrades now exist for the 986, 928, and even the 996 that are better dollar/hp ratios than the 993 can boast.

another item to consider is that many 993 owners who were waiting for the bugs to be ironed out in the 996 might be selling their cars to upgrade to a newer vehicle. i know of three people locally that have traded in their 993 for a 996 because the 993 was older, out of warranty, and outpaced by the 996.

just a few points to consider.
