So,
I was pulling the exhaust manifolds off of the engine when I came across one barrel nut that the PO had left stripped out. You can get all but one out, and you still have nothing. Under the heat exchanger there is no room to split the nut. I was preparing my self to need a pair of depends. I then remembered that Craftsman Impact Grade Bolt-Out™ Damaged Bolt/Nut Remover I bought. Ahh the joys of buying a tool yesterday for a problem that may happen tomorrow. The tool is like a socket that has teeth that cut into the dammaged fastner when you rotate it counter clockwise. This was just the tool since the only acess to the barrel nut was through the hole in the heat exchanger. I soaked the nut in every form of penetrating oil that I could lay my hands on and went to bed. Next morning, I said the prayer to St. Jude (patron of lost causes) and gave it a go. To my great joy. I had sucess!!! it took the nut right off. I just wanted to put this out there for anyone to avoid the excessive use of adult dipers. ![]()

Go to the sears or craftsman web site and search for "Bolt-out". The impact set is very pricy at $60, but smaller lighter duty sets go for around $20.

Does this craftsmen set work? Is the removal tool small enough to fit through the heat exchanger?
I have Dansk SSIs and have the same problem. Thanks. Last edited by dipso; 11-07-2010 at 06:21 AM.. |

I never bought the set and i use ss hex nuts. I don't recommend using ss nuts there unless you go through the motions of setting them up properly. Most guys use pelican's copper nuts with great success. I have luck with 1/4" sockets and universals fitting in my SSI holes... for whatever that's worth. Actually I might try a long thin sharp chisel and try to loosen it by pounding the barrel into removal

I'm going to order 3 nuts because I am missing 2 anyways. I was replacing my oil return tubes and noticed 1 barrel nut on each bank is missing. I'll need the 3rd because of the one that is stripped.
Then I'll take the new nut down to Sears and match it up to the removal tool and see if it fits. The nut is stripped out where the hex key would go. I could only do the tubes on the passenger side because I couldn't remove that stripped nut. It is in a tough place if it is stripped. The OP says it worked, just wondering if you bought it and tried it. |
