How do I know if my autoheat is alive?
I'm not sure if it is or not. I pulled the control module tonight. It was very dirty, and I'm cleaning it up with a replacement unit I bought. I'm not all out swapping it, because A) the unit I bought is not the same and B) the unit I bought has a broken switch.
So - I've cleaned up parts of it. But, how do I tell if the motor works? I'm going to crawl under the car to make sure the boxes aren't seized, but I'm worried about the motor. Anyone know how I can check and see if the motor is good? The Autoheat is out of an 84 Targa. I'm betting it is similar to an 83. Any help would be great. Thanks, Ken

My first search on PP was on Autoheat which didn't work. I was contemplating the wiring diagram and saying to myself "This is not going to be fun". My first search said there was a plastic ball and cup assembly inside the box which can pop loose. I thought "No frigging way". Sure enough that's what it was.

Yep - I checked that
The ball and cup is intact.
I was wondering if there is any way to check the motor, to make sure it is working....

Check the blower in the engine compartement just removing the 2 poles contact (brown and yellow wire).
Connect it with a 12V battery charger (yellow is +) and verify if the blower motor works. To do this you will provide two short wires with connectors from b.c. to connector ![]() (obviously, if the blower works you don't need to remove it)

Fixed!
Well - I've been doing other things, but I decided to see if I could get the autoheat working. I have another engine compartment blower, and I have some heater boxes that I bought off the board that look new. But - I figured I'd get my re-conditioned autoheat box put back in at a minimum.
So - I cleaned up all of the components. While I was doing things, I noticed that the circuit boards in the two autoheat units I had was the same. So - I cleaned all of the connections and swapped to the newer board. Also took this opportunity to swap to the cleaner outer housing and switch. So - plugged everything back in today. Turned the autoheat to Defrost. Turned the key to accessory, and heard noises that I have never heard before! The blower in the engine compartment came on. The footwell blowers came on! The motor in the autoheat housing started moving, and moved the flapper boxes to the "closed" position! With the engine compartment blower on, I moved the autoheat lever around, and sure enough - the flapper boxes are opening and closing! So - for the first time since I've owned the car, I have heat. I'm still going to swap out the flapper boxes, but wow - very excited! Ken
