Vehicle registration issue
I'm trying to register, in California, my 1971 911T that I bought as a tub. I don't have a pink slip obviously. The application says something about needing "US Federal certification" which stipulates that the vehicle complies with US Federal Motor Vehicle safety standards.
Any idea if such a sticker exists? I don't see one on the pillars. Thanks, RG |

I think the US VIN number series are different than Euro. That may be one way to establish it is a US model car.

I believe what the DMV is referring to is the sticker that should be on the driver side lock-post piller. Most likely the original was silver with black lettering and about 6" x 2". If you don't have one, you can get a new one from the Porsche dealer. However, they would need proof of ownership such as a title. Sounds like a catch22.
You can get an out-of-state registration, letter of title, and bill of sale from these people. Lost Car Titles, No Car Title at All? It worked for me. I got my '73 in California and it had a salvage title. I took the car to Missouri where it was in pieces for years and the sticker was missing. Then I moved to Iowa and soon talked to the folks in Alabama and got the paper work. Then I went to the Missouri DMV and applied for an original title. At first, they wanted to have the car inspected by a state trooper, but I told them it was out of state being restored (true at the time as the car was in Iowa and was just then moving back to Missouri), so they waived the inspection. 2 weeks later, I got the title. Since you are in California, when the people in Alabama do a title search, they will most likely find a California salvage title so it won't work for you. But if you can take the car to an address outside California, they won't find a salvage title in that state and it will most likely work. Then you leave the car outside California, take the Alabama paper-paper work to the California DMV to get the California title. If they want to do an inspection, say the car is out of state and maybe they will waive the inspection. It's worth a try as it did work for me in Missouri. Now, I do understand that California DMV can be Nazi like, so if you are able to get the car to a different state, just do the whole thing in that state. Then transfer everything back to California at a later date. edit: I forgot, after I got the Original Missouri Title, I went to the Porsche dealer and purchased a replacement door sticker for around $65.00. That was in '03. I am not sure if Porsche still provides that service. Last edited by abisel; 12-02-2010 at 03:44 PM.. |

Be careful....there are some articles on the net about some of these title services. I would insist on a bond of some sort to cover yer azzz if ya gets busted after spending the big bucks on a resto.

I bought a car from out of state without a title. The NM MVD did a 50-state check to see if it had been titled and another to see if reported stolen. I had to send a letter via registered mail to the last person that had titled it (per the report) and another to the last person that had a lien on it advising them of my intention to title it. Then I had to show the MVD the receipt where the letters were received or not deliverable. I had to post a bond for the book value of the car for 2 years to protect the MVD. I also was missing the same sticker (often called a "nader sticker")on the driver's door jamb due to a repaint..so they made me get a local trained policemen perform a special vin check to ensure there was no alterations in the other VINs. Took about a year, but I finally received a clear title.

Thank you.
Thank you all for your ideas. I think I'm going to give the "throw yourself at the mercy of the DMV". If that doesn't work I'll use a local title search service.
