95 911 c4- short grind noise when first shifting cold day
 

after starting the car for the first time in the mornings i noticed a short grind noise (same sound when you shift and dont step on the far enough). anyways it only happens each morning and only when i shift into 2nd gear. From then on the rest of the day it doesnt do it anymore and drives and shifts smoothly and fine.

any ideas? any solutions would be greatly appriciated.

I think some notchiness on the 1/2 shift is pretty normal. I suppose it might grind if you try to shift too fast. The type of oil you run will make a difference although I have found that it cannot be eliminated. Just shift slowly from 1 to 2 when cold.

make sure your clutch cable is adjusted properly, and press the clutch pedal ALL THE WAY IN.

993's have no cable.

The reservoir for the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder is combined with the reservoir for the brakes.

When the brake fluid is replaced, the clutch slave cylinder should also be flushed with new fluid but that is not done a lot of times.

I suggest this:

Flush the clutch slave cylinder. There is usually a lot of dirt coming out.

If the transmission oil is fairly old or unknown, replace with Synthetic or Dino; the G50 in a 993 can use both either 75W90 gear oil GL-5 Dino or 75W90 Synthetic gear oil like Mobil 1 Delvac.

Shift slow until warm.

If you don't know how old the fluid is, I suggest you get a pressure bleeder and replace the brake fluid first with new DOT 4, not DOT 3 as recommended by Porsche. Calipers have 2 nipples, one on each side for bleeding. Sequence is: right rear, left rear, right front, left front.

Then, when the brake system has new fluid, flush the clutch slave cylinder on top of the G50 transmission with more DOT 4. Remember that the fluid reservoir is for both brakes and clutch and make sure that it doesn't run dry. Pressure bleeder is a must; hand-pump type will work.

The above has to be done as regular maintenance for a 993 every 2 years and if you are not comfortable doing it, have a competent shop do it.
