Talking i'm wondering what 911 owners think..

hello all, i know this is a 911 forum, but i want to know if 911 owners/ drivers consider the Porsche 944 a "real" Porsche? it would be great if you could explain your thinking. thanks!

I do as I race against them all the time. While I prefer the rear engined 911 I have grown to respect the capabilities of the 944, it's looks, it's near perfect balance, and it's economy of use. They have their weak spots (as all cars do) but if properly maintained and prepared they are a great platform, especially to learn in at the track. IMO, anyone that subscribes to the "it's not a real Porsche" has their head up their @ss.

Sure it's a real Porsche; But....because we have the vantage of hindsight, for a multitude of reasons the 944 will never be revered as a 911 of similar vintage.

I think both my 944s were better all-round cars than my 911.

The turbo felt as if it was built from solid granite. Perfectly balanced and gorgeous looks.

Definitely a Porsche in every sense.

I have both an '87 944S and an '85 911. I love the 944 pretty much the same as the 911. It is very much a real Porsche in my view.

The only problem I see wth the 944 is that it costs the same or more than a 911 to maintain, while not having the resale of the 911.

That being said, I am contemplating buying one for my winter transport to replace the BMW.

I've got a 924S and a 911 and like them both fine.

Totally different cars, but they each do what they do very well. Both are relatively simple and easy to work on. The 911 is more "fun", but the 924S runs like the wind on these fast Texas highways.

Probably the most accurate here. The acquisition costs can be less - but the maintenance costs are about the same.

You must be younger. I know when I was younger I cared about what other people thought. Now I am older I could a rats' a$$.

The 924, the 944, the 951, 968, the 914 - the Boxster, Cayman and even the cayanne are all real Porsches - just drive one and you'll understand.

Most of the people that I've heard make comments like that are the ones that make enough money to buy a new 911 - but the reason they buy one is for the status. To me that's even worse that putting down another version.

yes, i am younger.. to be honest i don't really care what others think about the 944.. I love them!! i love porsches in genral, i think they are really cool and fun to drive. This whole little thing started when a guy i know was telling me that the 944 was really a VW.. and from what i have read i knew it was not, but anyways i did some more reasearch on it to confirm what i said and some of the sites i went to said that 911 owners hated the 944 and didnt concider it to be a real porsche. So i thought i would just ask some 911 owners to see if it's true.

I saw a red 994 turbo a few days ago, still looked amazing, very well built car.
I go to mosport race track sometimes and I see these cars still compete aginst newer cars.

I have never owned one, but I wouldn't mind having one in my stable. The 944 has great lines and from what I hear can hold it's own on the track.
The reason I bought a 911 and not a 944 is that I have owned VW Beetles all my life so the 911 seemed like a natural transition.

As they say "The love and beauty is in the eye of the beholder"!
I like the slightly blistered arches of the 944 especially if filled with a good set of wheels. It's engineered by Porsche and wears their badge - good enough for me.
I tend to hanker after cars for their 80's era looks and not necessarilly what make they are hence the Porsche and the fat Ford Capri. (although the Capri is definitely an Essex thing!)

I was a track marshall during the Paul Tracy 944 Turbo Cup days at Circuit Mt Tremblant, there were some pretty heated races between him and Scott Goodyear as well as some other notable drivers of that era.
Those cars were pretty hot, especially the ones with the "hidden modified" engine ECU hidden somewhere under the dash ... lol
Of course nobody knew about that in those days, surely not tech inspection !!!

To answer the question,yes a 944 is a real Porsche !

Cheers !

This may have been true "back in the day" when the cars were new but like the 914 that was also "not a real Porsche", they have proven themselves to be both a formidable sportscar, and a real Porsche.

Mine was a real Porsche.
Actually, I would not consider a VW at all, maybe more like an Audi if anything.
