Is this the correct shift knob for 83 SC coupe?
I was going to install this shift knob in my 83 SC Coupe, but now I'm not so sure that it's period correct. Would this have been on an 83 as issued?

That is what my 83 SC coupe has as well.
Does that mean it is the correct one??! I am not an expert at determining. Quote:

No. You have an earlier one, not exactly sure of the year but I think the one you have is from a 901 (early 70's). Ironically I also have an 83 with that same knob!
The correct one is shown on the following thread: WTB: 915 shift knob I believe you can buy a new one from PP. It used to be NLA but is for sale again. Pelican Parts - Product Information: 911-424-071-01-OEM

With respect, I do not think that is a shift knob for a 901. The 901's have that dogleg, or racing, shift pattern, with first gear down and far to the left, below the reverse slot. (On both that I've had, you almost have to pull the lever all the way over to the left, then down and in a mild "C" shape to find the gear, pulling the lever so far back that it nearly touches the front of the seat.)
FWIW, that does show the proper pattern for a 915. But you knew that.

I think you're right 5String. A 901 'style' with a 915 shift pattern. The one I have is an aftermarket, only bought it as at the time the correct one was NLA.
One thing for sure, it's not OEM for an 83

To clear things up...
The knob in the first post is correct for an '83. For a 915 tranny. 901 is a different shift pattern. (R - upper Left, 1st - lower Right) |

My '72 with 915 has the FIRST knob, with silver shift pattern under clear plastic.
My '83 with 915 has the knob shown in D911SC's link, with the same shift pattern molded into the knob, no silver, no clear plastic. No guessing for me!!

911SC factory knob
