The old spray carb-cleaner to find the leak trick...
I've been reading the way to find leaks in your CIS is to spray carb cleaner around the system, and if it raises the idle, then something is leaking. Well, I did that, and found when I sprayed at the location pictured and circled here, the idle jumped. Can anyone tell me what I am to make of this? I tightened the clamp thats there and re-sprayed, and after that the idle didn't move. But am I just covering up a bigger issue?

Isn't that the heater booster fan hose? If so, that has nothing to do with combustion. The intake runner located immediately behind it does, however.

That's what I thought too, it got in the intake port behind it. And I couldn't see how the heater hose had anything to do with the idle, either. I just wanted to post it here and make sure the experts thought the same. This being said, what does it mean that the idle raises when the carb-cleaner gets in the intake runner like that? What do I need to replace/repair exactly?

that hose has nothing to do with it.
take the hose off the car (1 minute of work) and that'll give you more room to see, and try the test again. |

Just as easy but a lot less messy, use a propane torch, NOT ignited of course.....if you need to reach in hidden or hard to reach areas, place a section of hose over the end of the torch. Ive been using this method for similar for over 30 years.

The intake for the air cleaner is just a few inches away. Could be that some of the spray fluid is just getting in there.
I have found the smaller leaks are pretty fussy about having the spray directed right at them to allow enough fluid to get in to increase the idle. |
