Turbo Motor in and Running - Poorly. Help Needed !
Boys,
As some of you may be aware I've been working on a 3.3l Turbo implant in my early car. After many minor trageidies, I installed the completed project on Sunday and ran the motor for the first time yesterday. It cranked right up and ran at high idle until I shut it down. Here are some considerations, followed by the running issues: 1. '79 3.3 Turbo motor, 25k miles. Been sitting for 10 years in a garage. 2. Motor is using a late model Fuel Distributor('86) due to availability. 3. I installed a MSD 6AL in place of the Bosch CDI. Issues: 1. Idle is running at about 2500. All linkage has been checked for set up and sticking. 2. Much white smoke coming from exhaust. 3. Anyone have a vacuum line diagram ? 4. Is there any idle speed adjustment? Thanks for the help. |
The Idle adjustment is on the throttle body(left side)depending on where it is set it may take a few turns to get it to come down.Mine will idle down in 3 to 5 minutes.your aux air valve and your wur should be getting voltage and should slow the idle down by controlling the bypass air and the control pressure on the fuel distributor. The only vacuum connections that I have on my rig is for the distributor (advance and retard) and the vacuum canistor for the power brakes.Don't know about the white smoke.Your guess is as good as mine. good luck.:)

Rich -
Glad to hear you have gotten to this point, very exciting! I did not realize the motor had been sitting for 10 years. Does it have a tensioner update? Had it been turned over from time to time? The stock tensioners can fail upon startup after sitting, that is where the update comes in. A ring can break when started dry. You probably know all of this, I'm just throwing it out there. I'd guess the high idle to be an adjustment issue due to the '86 fuel distributor and CIS ancillary systems. I hope nothing is hurt, the white smoke bothers me. My working rebuild knowledge is limitted to VWs (my 3.3T isn't working yet). I've seen white smoke emitting from one of those engines and it wasn't a good thing. Hope someone with more knowledge chimes in. |
Pinch the hose from intercooler to aux. valve regulator to see if idle goes down - if so then aux valve regulator is sticking open, no voltage to it or carbon deposits.
White smoke - combination of motor sitting for a long time. Piston rings may need to reseat, let it idle for a while then rev to 5k and hold for a minute. Couple vacuum hose connections: - distributor to throttle body, if later style have 2 hoses on dist - intercooler to wastegate - intercooler to aux valve - hose to compressor bypass valve - hoses for bypass throttle |
Could be the warm-up regulator. My turbo will run around 2200 rpm when it is warmed up and I trun it off for a while and restart it.
