Bursch Muffler ok on SSI's?

Hi

I just purchased a bursch muffler and learned that they do not mount with hangers like the stock style system does.

Will this cause any serious stress on my SSI's , or any other part of my engine? Have any of you made your own supports in addition to the 4 bolts on each side?

After reading other posts about this system, I am very curious to the sound. My cars unit had some holes in it above which I did not see until I removed it and it was quite raspy with some rumbling on decel ... I am hoping for a deeper sound and no backfiring from the new unit (with no holes in it)

Thanks for your thoughts!
Reg

I used some hose clamps to fashion a support. It worked for awhile, then the hose clamps fatigued and broke away. The bursch has be hanging free since without issue.

I've talked to others who bolted it up without hangers as well and nobody seems to develop problems.

I would think any system that works with the factory exchangers would work with SSI. That said, I personally would be nervous about running a system that has no support other than the four mounting bolts. Bursch is lighter than stock, so maybe that's why there is no additional support. Still, I think I'd be nervous. Perhaps guys who've run Bursch will weigh in here...have to admit I haven't used there system on a 911. Had one on an old 912 tho, and it worked well. Don't think it yielded the advertised power gains, but it worked well.

I'm with Chuck on this. I have a monza exhaust on my SSIs and I use large hose clamps attached to the body mounts.

I am nervous about allowing the SSIs to support the weight even though the construction of the SSI is nothing short of incredible.

For what its worth.

we have had several clients with the bursch and SSI combo. We had to install support brackets on most of them. Especially the track cars- all that high rpm use was causing the SSI and bursch brackets to crack. We fabricated extra brackets, welded to the bursch, and supported them from the engine mount console

SSI's are the heat exchangers exhaust manifolds out from the bottom of the engine that the muffler bolts to, and yes the SSI's are stainless steel.

I am concerned by using something "cheap" that I may harm somthing expensive more or less...as this muffler mounts and looks differently that the stock units that are much more expensive. Pelican has pictures of SSI's as well as Bursch and OE style mufflers in the catalog.
