One of the ball joints popped out of the socket on the throttle linkage. Is there a trick to put it back together (squeeze real hard?). How about taking those things apart?

Assembly, squeeze hard. To remove, just pop it off (sometimes you have to pry it off with a tool).

Also, these joints should be lightly greased.
Emphasis on lighly. I'd suggest placing the grease on the ball, not in the socket. |

Are you guys talking about the throttle linkage under the floor between the seats? If so, how do you access that? Mine squeaks and I'd like to fix it but I haven't figured out how to get at it... Eric H 87 Targa

Gaining access is best when the shift rod is removed. That way you can work through the center tunnel and there is way more room than just removing the driver's side floorboard. Those things should just pop on and off with moderate pressure.

Be careful. Throttle sticking can kill you.
The throttle hinges on a rod on the left side of the gear box, way in the back. I wouldn't use grease. It can start to pick garbage. Which could cause a throttle to stick wide open. Not a good thing. IMHO. I would clean them ( both ball and socket ) with brake cleaner. Then take apart the rod. It rides on 2 plastic bushings. Clean everything. Then lube everything with DRY GRAPHITE. I gave my car to someone at a DE event to drive in from one of the corners. He got in wound it up and the throttle stuck wide open. He had since/skills enough to turn the car off. But I thought to myself, what if my wife had been driving ? Would she know what to do ? What I found, was the rod was bent and hanging up on the bushings. So be careful and good luck ........... |

I was not aware there is a ball joint midway between the pedal and the rear link on the transaxle. I think only at the ends.
If something is squeeking between the seats during throttle movement, then something is rubbing. My main brake line was rubbing something once upon a time, maybe the throttle linkage; it wore a hole through the tube and slowly leaked brake fluid into the tunnel. The sockets on my '88 911 have a small wire clip that hold the ball in. You can do a lot of prying before you discover that little gentleman.

Agree that it is nice to discover that little holdit clip before trying to separate one of these balljoints. How would I know. When I was adjusting the actuation of the idle switch on my 87 I had to open the joint, drivers side top of the engine and found the best way was to slip a screwdriver between ball and socket and one twist later it was apart. I will lube all the joints this Sat. The kind of job that I like, do them one at a time and quit at any time. Ned Monaghan |

OK guys, I'm still confused. Where is all this stuff and how are you accessing it? Do you do it from under the car? Or pull the heater control, shifter console, etc.? Like I say, mine's sqeaking and rubbing on something between the seats and that's going to create a problem sooner or later... Thanks, Eric H 87 Targa

Eric, I'm talking about removing the center console and getting it from there. It only take about 15-20 minutes to take apart the console and once it's removed the clutch rod and shift rod can be easily accessed.

I am replacing the bushings on I believe the "bell crank" which Cary referenced above. From below the car this looks like it wont be too tough?? Do I have to detach the linkage, etc? I have carved out about an hour tomorrow A.M. so if it is going to be my usual fiasco perhaps I will postpone....

I THINK that the cable runs in its own tube inside the center console. ( for safety ) When I was asking for help on pulling my new fuel lines thru there wasn't much knowledge come to the surface. But you can feel the tubes with your fingers with the heater control/hand brake out. Right up against the top on the drivers side. Given/guessing that they are in there by themselves I would say you might have a kink in your cable rubbing against the tube.
I called Partsheaven to talk to a dismantler about what the inside of the tube looked like, and really couldn't get an answer. They don't go down that for before they get scaped out. Sitting here thinking, you might try one of the restoration sheet metal places. For they sell complete floor pans I think. Just a thought. If it were me, rather than take everything apart ( hours )I'd buy and pull a new cable thru and see where your at.
