Accelerator Linkage Binding at Clutch Cable Clevis Pin
 

Hi all,

I just took out my whole pedal assembly in my 1976 911 in order to replace a bad pin that holds the clutch pedal onto the clutch pedal rod. After putting everything back together, I noticed my car had a high idle whenever I would push the clutch pedal down. I took a closer look at the area where the accelerator linkage passes next to where the clutch cable attaches to the clutch pedal via the clevis pin and that is the area which is binding. Whenever I push the clutch pedal down, the idle slightly increases because the clutch cable is pulling the accelerator linkage down. I have been fiddling with the are where the linkage and the clutch cable meet, but I simply cannot find a way to separate the linkage and the clutch cable far enough apart to not cause any binding. In fact, the accelerator cable is blocking the clevis pin hole for the clutch cable connection, so I have to put the clevis pin in from the other side in order for things to work the way they are.

The one new thing I have noticed after putting the new pin in the clutch pedal is that the clutch rod where the clutch cable connects to it is sitting farther back in the tunnel than before when the pedal is NOT depressed. When the clutch pedal IS depressed to the floor, the clutch cable clevis pin connection is barely visible from outside the tunnel. From the 101 Projects book, it looks like the clutch cable clevis pin connection should sit far outside of the tunnel.

Has anyone had similar issues or have any ideas on how to stop the binding? All pedal cluster bushings (including the accelerator bushings) have been replaced with brass and the bushings in the engine compartment and springs have all been replaced too.

I had similar symptoms when the clutch cable got wrapped around the accelerator cable, or vice-versa. You can use a small mirror and a flashlight to look into the tunnel from the pedal area and get a view towards the rear of the car. This may or may not be your problem but it is common and would contribute to the symptoms you have. Jim

Jim, thank you for the suggestion. I will pull the clutch cable tomorrow and carefully reroute it again to make sure it is not wrapped around the accelerator cable.

Yeah mine did that exact thing... You can gently bend the link from the accel pedal that is in the tunnel until it no longer binds. No need to remove the assembly.

Thanks for the help guys. I ended up routing the clutch cable through the tunnel and making it go above the accelerator cable instead of beneath it. I hooked up the clutch cable on the transmission end, hooked up my accelerator pedal, and there does not seem to be any more binding. The cable is almost rubbing against the clutch cable connection but at least it does not seem to be binding. I'll put the rest (shifter, console, etc) back together, make final adjustments to the clutch, drive it around and I'll let you know if this was the final cure to the problem.
