1973 - 1975 rear deck lids

If anyone has standard 1973-76 MY 911 or 911S cars , that have their original rear standard steel deck lids . Could you please post photos showing the perimeter of the underside of the lid. And also please note production month (or chassis number) of the car the photo is from.

I need to see multiple examples of all four years (note , I made my thread title wrong , 73-76 MY).

thank you

thx tof2.7,

just a photo in general showing the underside of the deck lid. So , if its on the car. Open the lid, crouch down a bit. And take a photo which includes the whole perimeter of the underside.

thx again

And let me know how early or late in production year it is.

Here's a mid-run 74 decklid. The black strip across the middle is a rubber trim piece.

If I tell you , I'll spoil it . I'll let the mystery continue so you'll dig out some lids and look at them with me (hopefully - or it will just take me a bit longer).

If you look at enough lids from these years , you'll figure it out what i'm looking to see there or absent . I'm trying to chronicle by production time frame.

Thx

My guess - the notch in the underside lip for the air pump. Mine's got it & kodioneill's doesn't (my car's production date is 6/76):
(kodioneill - that's a clean looking lid you've got there )

Yes dave ,

That's one feature that i'm trying to figure out when it was inplimented into the manufacturing process of deck lids. Theres another.

My take on the partial moon recess is yes , for the smog related equipment on that side. But it was not a neccessity . And was not implimented originally in unison with the smog (air pump). As the equipment clears and if you look around . You can see 1975's with air pumps can have the non recess lid. I'm not a US 1974 expert, so maybe even 1974 Calif cars had air pumps ?. It is just for EXTRA clearance. Some motors when runny rough and shaking , (or maybe hard lurching lanches ?) probably could vibrate and occassionally touch that spot on the lid. So it was changed. The partial moon/circle recess seems to come about sometime in the 1975 production year. But then , maybe it even came in as early as end of 1974. That's what I'm trying to figure out.

And also , when the other feature was initiated

' 74 CA cars still had 2 in 2 out exhaust and not the thermal reactor exhaust and the smog pump. However, '75 models were manuf'd in '74, so I think you have it right.

For the sake of clarification, when 'I' say/write a year , and have no other text attacted to it . I am speaking of MY (Model year of prod. ). But I will try to include MY more, when I reference it

I'm pretty sure was not an initial 1974 - 75 MY change. But sometime during one of those two years of production. The other change is sometime in the 73-74 MY's

Also to tell the truth , i'm always intererested in general about most 911 related items . But here , I not as interested in what it's for. As when it starts (unless they relate. Which in this case it , it doesn't seem it was 100% needed).

I only know it's differant . So it can be used as a time reference. Once you know when it was changed.

Thx

1975 US Carrera

'73 has a different lid than the other 3 years as it was prior to the impact bumpers.

For instance, the license lights are in the lid itself, not the bumperettes.

OK - now that I understand what you are doing, I'll play. March 1975 production date.

And we know that Porsche AG did not always align their production to the MY. Deep 6 Fuchs were replaced mid MY and the list goes on.

Ratbox,

Now that you let us know the other feature you are interested in--the rectangular bump by the rubber stop on the engine lid--here's something that may help: My 73.5 T (manufactured in 5/73) has the bump but here's something I noticed that you may wish to pursue. There is an identical rectangular bump on the frame of the engine opening that lines up directly with the bump on the lid. You can see it in kodioneill's second picture of his post and in your own picture in your last post (it's just off the upper left corner of the gold sticker on the latch bulkhead.) Now, here's what may be of interest to you. I checked the lid on my 69 and it has the bump on the lid but the bump on the body opening is not there.

73.5 engine lid:

73.5 bump on opening:

69 engine lid:

69 engine opening--no bump:

Hope you can use this information.
