Is $250 a good price for anew windshield?
I think he said the aftermarket glass brand was (sp?) Pilkinson with gasket installed for $250.
OEM was $280. Thoughts. |

That would be "Pilkington" and $250 is fair.
OEM was Sekurit (if you are talking about a 911) and they are more like $1k from the dealer.

I'd have to agree
$250 is dirt cheap for a good windshield for a 911. $1000 sounds about right from the dealer. I would think PPG would make some good reasonably priced windshields for Porsches as well.

No matter which glass you decide on do not go with anything but a Porsche seal, it is the only one that will seal and look correct in the corners.
Just my $.02 Regards |

depends on the year of the car - sounds like an earlier one pre964 without the radio antenna in the windshield ?

I had a tinted W/S with a blue shade installed by Glass America for $247.00. I furnished a new Porsche gasket. BTW as previously discussed, I wouldn't use an after market gasket because the upper corners do not have adequate coverage. I knew the installer and he did a superb job.
For that kind of money it really doesn't make much difference who's W/S you're using. Sooner or later they'll all get pitted anyway...

They do. I have a PPG windshield in mine. ~$225 installed and I supplied the gasket.

That's a good deal but make sure that you buy a german seal from our host. The aftermarket seals are JUNK!

I supplied the gasket and had a PPG installed for $200 two years ago...so you're right in the ballpark.

Any one else notice how distorted the NEW glass looks in the new 911's...there's so much distortion, it comes off like it was made for a 1975 Ford...
And I remember a technical series Porsche used to put in car mags showing things like a grid they put behind the windshield as a quality check against bad glass. I suppose the 75K+ you now pay for a 911 just isn't enough money to do the job right!

I agree that in general.....US manufacturers of US cars show much less glass distortion than (say) Euro cars that had Euro safety glass in mind to be used for the home market ( breaks into small pieces)...vs....those same Euro cars using US-spec safety glass for the US market ( laminated safety glass).
Another area of Weideking-inspired cost cutting, it seems, just like the *awful* orange-peel on post 996 car's paint compared to earlier air-cooled cars.

PPG is now called PGW, PGW Auto Glass
I had a PGW windshield installed in April, it was $205 for the glass. I got a OE seal from our host and it was even a bit short in the passenger side upper corner. Tom

If one uses a factory seal and STILL has problems getting the corners to fit....look at what Randy Blaylock says here.... brilliant---> Gap between Rubber Windshield Seal & Body

I just sourced a PPG new windshield for my 84 Carrera locally in RI for $150.00 no install, just pickup the glass and install myself.
I agree that you should use the factory OEM seal. I'm going to use the 964 seal (also used on some 89 Carrera cars). I've heard mixed results on this. The 964 seal is all rubber with no metal trim and I like this look better. I also have a spare carrera seal with metal trim if I need it. I'll be sure to post my results on how this install goes, should get to the install within the next 2 weeks.
