Trunk Latch Question

The latch on my '86 Carrera is locked and with cylinder will not turn. Can someone describe how it should function so that I can try to get it functioning properly?

Does the ignition key turn the lock or is a different unique key? The cylinder is hard as a rock and I don't want to abuse the ignition key anymore.

Should the cylinder be vertical when unlocked or horizontal?

Does the cylinder act like a button that pops out when unlocked and depresses for locking (sping loaded)?

Any thoughts on how to remove it...it appears to have a bolt from the topside, which would require removal of the blower ducting.

I know this is a silly problem

Thanks
Chad

My ignition key works the trunk lock. Insert key turn 180 degrees and it is locked. Pull will not pull when locked.

Any help?

Warner

Chad,

Not a "silly" problem.

The "unlocked" position for the lock is vertical.

The lock does not pop in/out as a function of locking status.

Your ignition key should service all of the locks on the car.

That being said, do not get overly aggressive with the removal
of the lock, as a broken cable can add other serious issues
such as the removal of the front bumper for access to the lock.

Try some graphite lubricant on the lock.

Good luck,

Gerry

Do you have both an ignition and a valet key? They supposedly have the same notches, but the blank is different. You need the igniton key, try using the key to lock/unlock the glove box it should be the same key as the trunk.

Thanks so much guys. I just needed to get some of the basic info to prevent further frustration/damage.

I don't have a second key unfortunately. Will give the graphite lube a try, but WD40 hasn't done a thing. I wish there was some play just to work the key while lube sank in. This thing is bound tight...must have gotten water in it a long time ago?

All the posts above help.

Thanks

I have a related problem with the hood lock on my car. I gather that there is a way to remove the lock barrel from the latch-handle housing, but I can't seem to make that happen. You probably won't be able to do it either, if yours is locked, because from what I'm told, the lock sends a metal finger from the lock barrel up into the housing.

I further gather that it is possible to remove the entire handle/housing/cable assembly from the car and transplant in a new/used cable and latch handle. Supposedly the handle unscrews/unbolts from under the dash, but again, inspections with a light don't show me where/how to do this.
