Do you need to change windshield seals when changing windshield?

I am going to have my windshield replaced on my 89 930. Is it normal practice to have the seal changed as well? My insurance company is picking up the tab so I want to make sure that they don't try to reuse the old ones.

If the 930 windshield/seal is like the 911, then yes, replace the seal also. Proper removal of an old seal usually requires cutting to preserve the soft, metal trim piece necessary to make a leak-free fit. If the seal is relative new and still supple, it can be removed intact but I doubt a glass installing company will take the time to do so. Two warnings: First, be sure the installers are experienced with Porsche windshields and the installation of the metal trim. Second, be sure the new seal is Genuine Porsche, not just OEM quality. Do yourself a favor and ask about these issues before the installers arrive.

If the existing seal is still nice and soft then you may want to reuse it. I just had my windshield replaced and insurance would pay for a new seal. The glass guy said that my old seal was still in really nice shape (it's not the original 30 year old seal), no cutting required, he just pushed the old windshield out.

Several years ago I had some rust in the lower corners of the windshield frame fixed, that seal was still in nice shape so I reused it at the time. It must have been fine because when the windshield came out this time there was no new rust underneath.

Anyway, since insurance paid for a new seal and the glass guy had a new seal from the Porsche dealer with him I used it.

Thanks for the tips guys. Got the name of a good local glass company from some PCA members. The dealer also uses them. Thankfully they are providing new seals so I should be in good shape!
