Hello all, when I start my car in the mornings I get this ( see Photo ) sometimes its worse than others but the photos is the worse I have seen it. It is oil that comes out of the exhaust. The car is a 1986 911 Turbo with a Euro Exhaust. When I bought the car several months ago, the compression was solid on all cyliners and the leakdown was good to... If I dont have a problem can someone tell me what this is? I would say its leakage past the rings being blown out during startup. Help!

its looks as though its just normal "dirty" condensation from the exhaust, nothing to worry about.

if you notice smoke from the exhaust then you may have problems.

It not uncommon for turbos to blow a mess of oil if the breather system is not right or if the oil level is too high. It does not mean you have a mechanical problem.

Well it only took you guys 20 minutes to ease my mind. Thank you. I will check to see if it is dirty water or oil. I do notice the condensation happening all the time, but for some reason it has just gotten worse over the last few days.. Maybe just the weather. Again thanks for the help and advice. You guys are the greatest

Not to raise an alarm, but my 3.2 looked like that with bad valve guides. My symptoms included the smoke as Richard mentioned above. Oil drops into exhaust past exhaust valve guides. Once the car is re-started it blows out the accumulation. Guide condition is not determined by compression or leakdown testing. John Walker needs to offer his opinion as well...

It could be oil leaking past the bearing that support the turbo wheel. How many miles do the turbo have on it? and how do you treat the turbo when shutting down the car?

It looks like just a little sooty condensate. My 83 SC spits a little on statup also. Yours definitely looks like black water and not brown oil.

Carbon and water. Oil doesn't leak out exhasts. If it 's in there, it gets burned into blue smoke. It is common for carbon to blow out of there, particularly during startup (for that matter it is common for oil smoke to pour out of there during startup). Excessive carbon out the tailpipe suggests a rich fuel mixture.

Relax and drive the car. In fact, take a long drive and, ahem, 'blow the carbon out.'

I'm glad you said "this only happens on startup in the morning". If you notice this liquid coming out ALL the time (its probably water as others have said), then I'd have to ask how long are your drives between stop and go? If you don't allow the engine to warm up, you can build up a lot of condensation in the muffler (engine sump too).

Just to supplement the opinions and questions:

car has 45k miles on it.

always warm car up and cool it down after rides

Drive car everyday 10 miles one way to work

Car is in the garage always, and yes WATER does come out the exhaust when I start it...along with WHITE smoke (condensation I presume)

Friday I am going to stand there with a paper towel and see what does come out..

Heck I should probably send it to the lab for spectrochemical analysis ..lol

I can assure you that a bad exhaust valve guide will allow oil to 'leak' out of an exhaust. It never 'sees' the combustion chamber, leaks down into the exhaust system. On startup you will get a blue cloud AND droplets of oil coming out of the exhaust. Of course, as temperature rise in the system all this oil is most likely burned instead of expelled. Your situation seems to be more of carbon buildup though.

Ohhhh, how I wish I'd had my camera handy. Last May, Cambria. we were asked to help (Dare I say who..yeah, I will!) RLJ take his beautiful "Iris" off the trailer. The trailer had an upright piece, painted a nice white. Randy crawled in Iris, fired up that big bore power...the sound was fantastic. And there were two perfectly round black spots on that once white upright piece. These spots perfectly matched the spacing of the sport muffler's twin outlets. My 83 930 does that everytime I start it. Seems to be a little blacker when the CO is set a little too rich.Mine is just condensation and soot mixed.I did a complete overhaul about 6000 miles ago.I get a touch of blue smoke when I start up which quickly turns to white until engine warms up,Then no smoke.Hope this helpshttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/fles.gif

I think that if it was something serious, you would see black smoke most of the time, notice the car down on power, and your oil consumption would go up. If it makes you feel better, have the hydrocarbons checked at your local shop to see if they are still low...
