Killed my splitter, wanna make a new one...

I have a backdated fiberglass 73 RS front end. I HAD a fiberglass splitter underneath and killed it from speed bumps, low ride height and driving while stoopid.

I'd like to make one out of sheet aluminiumununm......I've adjusted the ride height to deal with my new locale and softened the front Konis. Sorry, can't fix stoopid....

Does any one have one that can make me a pattern? Otherwise I need to pull my front end and driving lights......I'm in no hurry, it's winter and it's one of my projects while snow is on the ground.

Help is appreciated, scorn or snotty responses will be met with a taunt, reference to your grandparents copulating in a Yugo and a steenky fart in your general direction.

15,922 posts! Are they all this funny? (references to monty python movies e.t.c.)

I would go for a sheet of carbon fiber instead of aluminium..

I have a rep to keep up.

CF is nice but I have the "sheet" sitting and ready to go. CF shatters when whacked, I could care less about looks since I am gonna paint it in pink pastel camoflage, is pricey and I'm a cheapbastard since the divorce and the forceable bendover.....

Other than that the play was great Mrs Lincoln....

Where is the damage, under the oil cooler ? My only thought it that a plate of AL sticking out there would look great, but possibly tear your whole nose off if it caught on anything.

It would look great though if it stuck out about an inch in the center and contoured back to about 2 1/2 on the sides, curving back to nothing.

No damage beyond the breakage of the splitter. The price of a splitter is a bit much based on the fact that it's a flat piece of stock that I can make.

The price PLUS shipping is buggernutz extreme. Does ya gets my dilemma?

I guess in the middle of an ice storm, the bazooka heater going, INXS or Lincoln Park at 13 and the GF telling me I'm an idiot, the amount of effort won't that bigga deal to pull the front end and do the trace myself.....

Doing a similar thing for my 3.0RS type front. I assume being a splitter you are projecting forward from bottom edge of spoiler.

I used a large sheet of heavy paper or cardboard and held it up against the bottom of the spoiler - then traced round the bottom edge of spoiler down onto the paper with a marker pen. That gave me the profile at point of attachment.

I then measured forward the required number of inches from the line on the paper to get front edge of splitter and back from the line to get the mounting surface. Then cut out the template.

Can now use it for aluminium, CF, FG, Plastic or plywood. Only suggestion I would make is make the mounting points as slots in the splitter - slide it forward for track days and back for street. You don't want to be taking anyones feet off at the ankle with the splitter worn to a sharp edge.

Hey, Joe Bob, I know you have the sheet (yes, you definitely have the sheet) but when you find a nice piece of Kydex laying beside the road (or just inside the door of a local fabrication joint) get it and never look back (or forward).

Sorry, only the non cooler S bumper here, so's I ain't gots the pattern. The thing is, cut the leading edge the way you wants it and lay it under there and trace the back edge. If it hangs back a bit, you get even more aero and more strength.

I done this on my pickemup back when Paul Tracy was king.

As I said in another thread, the car hobby, the whole thing, is silly.

"Only suggestion I would make is make the mounting points as slots in the splitter - slide it forward for track days and back for street. You don't want to be taking anyones feet off at the ankle with the splitter worn to a sharp edge." I think by the time you're cutting at the ankles, you might have a bigger problem.

I keep thinking that aluminum will end up bending and just look wavy.
A cheap alternative might be a couple/three layers of flat greenhouse fiberglass bonded or pop riveted together. It is dirt cheap and will stay flat even if you beat it hard enough to crack it.

just make one out of CF or Fiberglass. Easy - not that hard. The al one look like azz in a very short period of time.

Went with steel.....cut out a pattern, traced it on the stock and mounted it.....very solid no discernible flex. More solid than the CF I killed.

Three layers of primer and then trim black. Matches the trim on the car....
