fender mounted foglights?
has anyone seen fender mounted foglights? I'm thinking of mounting a pair of 914 fogs in the location in the pics. has anyone seen this or have pics? I'm also deleting the horn grills. I'm considering deleting the headlamps to save a few pounds and using the fogs as my headlamps. any thoughts? Don.

I guess I'll start by asking for a bit more information on your proposed use of the car. The saving weight comment makes me think racing but I don't know any of the rules of race cars so I have no clue as to the need for headlights at all. Would you mind expanding just a bit? You piqued my interest on this one.

some good ideas..
deleting your head lamps might shave a little. But if you had to drive at night oncoming traffic may not be too happy with you. or is it going to be a track only car?

Little high for fogs, ya want the beam flat and under the tulies....I would mount them under the bumper. 914 fog lights have a different lense that diffuses light and not good for driving....they are designed for fog.
Fender or hood mounted lights are best used for extra driving lights. Unless you shave the fenders you are going to have a BIG wind deflector. BTW, some racers remove the passenger side headlight, cut a hole and use that for extra oil cooling. The passenger side grill brings in air for a cooler if you have one. DOT approved lights are required for night driving on the streets...prolly not a good idea to delete the headlights. If this is a dedicated race car, you need to check with the rules as to what is allowed for night racing or deletion for weight savings.

the car is street use but rarely driven at night. I said foglights but really meant driving lights. the 914 lights seem to have a wide flat beam that should work OK for the little night driving I do.
I am putting in a fender cooler this winter but will duct from the stock bumper fog light hole. I like the 'clean' look so I'll be glassing over the horn grill opening and fairing it into the fender shape. the lightweight thing has gotten to be a bit of a hobby. when the kids decided they just HAD to have a radio, we gave up the glove box door and found some aluminum seatbelt buckles. it's kind of fun to see how much you can take off. I'm down to about 1960 lbs now with a little bit of gas. |

here's a VERY rough idea of what I mean by deleting the horn grills.

Some thoughts:
1. Don't know of anyplace that allows for headlight deletion for a car operated on public roads. Proper headlights are the law. 2. Headlights will actually be slightly lighter weight than the add-ons. 3. Headlights will be a LOT more aerodynamic than the add-ons. We all understand the urge to make our 911's stand out from the crowd, but I don't see the value in this. Last edited by tcar; 11-30-2010 at 08:07 AM.. |

not a race car ( except drag racing events ), strictly a road car. I ran around for a year with yellow headlamps, nobody cared. things aren't quite as strict here as in the US. comes with a national police force that has better things to do and maybe spends their time more wisely than writing citation$ to plump up the city/county/state coffers
![]() the legalities don't really bother me. the very worst that can happen is I get a 'fix it and show us within seven days' notice. now, getting back to the real issues....... I did weigh the headlamps and the lights, driving lights are about half the weight and will look good too. I'll never get to speeds where aerodynamics will become an issue. I may end up leaving the headlights, we'll see. and I found some pics of lamps mounted where mine will go, they're hood lamps but it's the same idea. Robs 911ST Cafe' Racer I've got a bunch of mechanical work to do so I'm saving the bodywork till after christmas. we'll see how I feel about it then. I do tend to change like the wind. ![]() Last edited by haycait911; 11-29-2010 at 09:07 PM.. |

I think that instead of using the fender mounted driving ligts you can use plastic headlight covers of an earlier 911. and delete the headlights. Behind these covers you can install the driving lights.

OK, I'm still trying to understand WHY you are thinking of doing this, makes little sense.
Just the "HEY, look at me!" thing? |
