Instrument Panel 911/996 Turbo

Can anyone help.. Is the digital data on instrument bezel showing the distance traveled (mileage) a function of the bezel or is the mileage recorded on the vehicle computer?? The reason for the question is that I want to replace the instrument panel containing all bezels. Will the distance traveled be zero (a function of the bezel) or my actual mileage ( a function of the vehicle computer).
Can the speedo be changed from MPH to KPH and if so how? I haven't purchased the new one as yet so I can't check to see for myself.
Can anyone refer me to any article which explains how to remove the instrument panel from the dashboard so that I may make the change myself.

The bezel is the trim that holds the glass to the gauge. Speedo's can be replaced to reflect mph or kph as necessary. As I understand it, the speedo retains the information electronically and not the computer but to know for sure, contact a speedo rebuilding shop like Hollywood.

The speedo retains the mileage, but the computer maintains a records of the hours.

If someone wanted to falsify the mileage, they could just buy a replacement cluster with a lower mileage and swap it out (about a 20-minute job once you know where all the connections and clips are). When looking seriously to buy a later-series car, it makes sense to get a PPI and compare the miles to the hours. It should be about 30 miles for every hour on the engine, considering that most cars are split between surface streets and highways. If it gets too lopsided, it's a danger sign. You can also buy software (Durametric) for laptops that will let you connect to the OBDII port and see the engine hours, fault codes, the number of times the engine has been over-revved, etc. for about $600.
